Blog Tour/Spotlight: The Dressmaker's Duke by Jess Russell

Description:

Rhys Merrick, Duke of Roydan, is determined to be the antithesis of his depraved father, repressing his desires so severely he is dubbed "the Monk" by Society. But when Olivia Weston turns up demanding payment for gowns ordered by his former mistress, Rhys is totally flummoxed and inexplicably smitten.  He pays her just to remove her from his house, and mind.  But logic be damned; he must have this fiercely independent woman.

Olivia's greatest fear is becoming a kept woman.  She has escaped the role of mistress once and vows never to be owned by any man.  Rather than make money in the boudoir, she chooses to clothe the women who do.  But when a fire nearly kills her friend and business partner, Olivia's world goes up in smoke and she is forced to barter with the lofty duke.
As their lives weave together, Olivia unravels the man underneath the Monk, while Rhys desires to expose the lady hiding behind the dressmaker. Will his raw passion fan a long-buried ember of hope within her? Can this mismatched pair be the perfect fit?

Excerpt:
“Could you move, please?”
Was it her imagination, or was his voice higher than usual? Then what he actually said registered.
“Move?”
“Yes. Could you move across the room? I find to judge a garment, or anything properly, one must see it in motion.” Her face must have been reflecting the horror she felt, for he hastened on, “You would not expect me to buy a horse simply by looking at its lines would you, Mrs. Weston? I would wish to see it run as well. I’m sure you understand.”
Blast him and his bloody horses. She strode forward, happy to vent some of her anger in movement; however, she realized a split second too late there was nowhere to move. The receiving room was not large and was mostly taken up with the cutting table. The only area with any appreciable room was at the far end of the shop where the huge paneled mirrors stood. He was standing directly in the path that would be her best direction. Consequently, she found herself almost flush up against him.
She knew he was tall. Any fool could see the man was at least two or more inches over six feet, but from this vantage point—directly beneath him—he was so very tall. She could smell the starch of his shirt mixed with a faint whiff of smoke and possibly brandy? She slid her gaze over the shirt and waistcoat to his cravat—a conservatively tied Oriental—to the firm, slightly cleft chin, moving on to the lips, very swiftly past those, and finally resting on his eyes. Pure molten gold. Yes, exactly like those of the Burmese tiger she had seen at a menagerie in Paris. His bearing was just as predatory.
“It would appear, sir, in order for me to move, as you require, you will have to bestir yourself as well.”
She thought she saw one side of his mouth shift ever so slightly upward into what might have been the merest twitch of a smile. She could not be one hundred percent sure because, to do so, she would have to look at his lips. The duke shifted his weight and made a small bow. Her shoulder brushed the superfine of his midnight blue jacket as she hurriedly squeezed past him.
She strode almost to the mirrors before wheeling around and giving him what she hoped was an accusatory look.
“Well, Your Grace. I hope you are satisfied”
“Satisfied, Mrs. Weston?” He raised that infernal eyebrow. “Oh no, madam, I am very far from satisfied. However, I am hopeful I will be, in the not so distant future.” Again his gaze raked over her.  “Yes, I do live in hope.”

Blog Tour/Review: The Eleventh Brother by Rachel K. Wilcox

The Eleventh Brother, by Rachel K. Wilcox
2015, 352p, Clean Historical Fiction
My Rating=5 Stars
Source: Received a copy from the publisher for an honest review

When Joseph, the eleventh son of Jacob, is sold into bondage by his brothers, Egypt is a land in turmoil—its fortune determined by the unpredictable rains that either bring prosperity or leave the people in famine and starvation. But Joseph is no common slave. Imprisoned and forgotten by all but God, he interprets a dream that reveals the future and alters his destiny. Now with his privileged Egyptian-born wife, Asenath, at his side, Joseph's transformation from the boy in the pit to the ruler of Egypt is nearly complete. But position and power cannot erase the bitterness he holds deep inside. When he suddenly comes face to face with the family that betrayed him, Joseph devises a plot to test his brothers' true character. Yet even revenge may not fill the aching hole in Joseph's heart, and the influence of a beautiful woman may be his only hope for redemption.

I loved this book!! It didn't matter at all that I already knew the plot and how it would end. Most of it is told in flashback so Joseph meets up with his brothers fairly early on and it takes a while to get to the amazing ending, which brought tears to my eyes. This is a well written and well researched novel and I read most of it in one day.

The portrayal of Potiphar and his wife was interesting to me. She's always portrayed as an evil, over-the-top character and here she was his friend. It made what she did even more sad, though. This storyline was one of the most intriguing to me.

We also learn more about Judah and what happened to him after the brothers left Joseph in the wilderness. His life wasn't easy. He was more careful in his protection of Benjamin because of what he'd learned through the experience with Joseph and was determined not to repeat it.

There's a great "Note to the Reader" at the end where the author shares some of her research and I found that quite interesting.  This is a fantastic read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction and/or the story of Joseph!

As coincidences start piling up, Ava insists that if they follow the rules for being Alicia, everything will be fine. But when another boy is killed, the DNA evidence and surveillance photos point to only one suspect—Alicia. The girl who doesn’t exist.

As she runs from the cops, Lexi has to find the truth before another boy is murdered. Because either Ava is a killer . . . or Alicia is real.

Blog Tour/Review: Mechanized Masterpieces 2: An American Anthology

AUTHOR BIO

Playing with imaginary friends and writing and directing plays in the neighbor's garage filled D. Lee Jortner's childhood. Today she lets her imagination flow onto her keyboard as she writes mystery, fantasy and steampunk stories and novels. "Payoff for Air-Pirate Pete" is her first short story for Xchyler Publishing. She also enjoys her marketing role with the company and teaching English composition at Ivy Tech Community College in Valparaiso, Indiana. When not writing or working, Jortner is usually busy with her husband, children or grandchildren.

Q/A for D. Lee Jortner

1. Please share how you came up with the concept for your story?
I always loved O.Henry.  I remember my Dad reading me his stories when I was a child. My favorite was The Ransom of Red chief.

2. Please name some of your other published works?
My one short work available on Amazon is Chimmeken Crossing the Delaware, An American Historical Fantasy

3. What is your preferred writing genre?
Genre doesn't matter to me, but it has to ring true.

4. And preferred reading genre?
I love historical fiction, of all types.

5. Do you have any particular writing habits?
I stay up very very late writing when my muse hits me, then try to sleep, and look at it in the morning.  Often it is so full of error, I can't stand myself, but I usually find some nuggets I can use.

6. Do you have a playlist that you created while writing your story?
Total quiet.  And if I put on music, I could not tell you what is was, I am in the zone and I hear nor see anything else.

7. Panster or plotter?
Panster for sure.

8. Advice for writers?
Get lots of eyes to look at your work, and then keep the parts you love, in spite of the advice.

9. What's up next for you?
I want to take Effie and Clayton on another adventure.

A story about train-robbing outlaws always sounds intriguing to me! This one is based on The Ransom of Red Chief by O. Henry.  It starts with Effie and Clayton planning their final heist. After this, Effie told Clayton she wanted to settle down and start a family. We get some foreshadowing with her next line, "About a week later, I was of a different mind." As I read their intricate plans, I couldn't help thinking how successful they would be if they put all that time and energy into a legitimate business. But then there wouldn't be a story.

They need to alter their plans and decide to take something for ransom. They decide on Pete Rothenberg, son of Joseph Rothenberg, the Vice-President of Wyoming Railway and Steam Company. This experience turned out very differently than either of them thought it would. Pete was a handful and their time with him was highly entertaining. I liked the twist the ransom took at the end. This was a fun story! I was glad to read that the author is planning to take Effie and Clayton on another adventure--I would be interested to read more about them.

I love the length of these stories since it doesn't take long to get through each one. I plan to make my way through all of them. Be sure to check out the other authors and stories on the tour schedule below!

Praise for the Book

“This book is original, cleverly written and most of all a great read.”

“This novel is very suspenseful and can be enjoyed by young and old alike.”

“I really, really liked the story line, it is fresh take in the high fantasy/magic genre.”

EXCERPT: CHAPTER ONE

Spring Bloom

Pulling her blond locks away from her face, Lilika headed outside her cozy house to do her morning chores. When she hit the doorway, she stopped and lifted her face skyward, soaking in the sun’s beams. She reveled in the heat beating down on her and the feeling of warmth that bathed her skin.

She walked to the garden and sat down. Lilika pulled the weeds with the sun shining on her.

Her fingers ran across something smooth.

“What is this?” she muttered to herself, digging quickly to try to see just what was in there. She exposed something gleaming from underneath the brown soil.

What could be under the dirt here? She pulled out a gold heart locket from the garden bed. It glittered in an almost magical way, like nothing she’d ever seen before.

“Lilika!” Jet yelled through the open kitchen window. “It’s almost time for school.”

She shoved the locket in her pocket. “Okay! I’m coming.” Her little brother could be such a nuisance sometimes. She would have to wait until later to inspect her find up-close.

“Hello,” a female voice came from behind her.

“Hello?” She jumped up and turned around, shielding her eyes from the sun.

It was so bright, all she saw was a figure blocking out the light, a black silhouette outlined by the sun’s rays. As her eyes adjusted to the change in light, the figure became clearer and clearer: A beautiful, golden-hued woman stood before Lilika.

“Lilika,” the woman said.

How does she know my name?

“Lil! It’s time to go,” her brother yelled again.

She whipped her head around. “Okay, I’m coming.” By the time she turned back, the golden woman was gone.

She stood, walked to the side of the house, and peered around the corner, but the golden woman wasn’t there. She swiveled her head to each side, but didn’t see her. Could this all have just been a figment of her imagination? Maybe sitting in the sun was affecting her. Butterflies danced in her stomach at the thought of the locket she’d found, and she hurried into the house to get ready for school.

***

The mile-long walk to school was a quiet one except for Jet humming to himself. Children said goodbye to their parents and walked out of their rural homes surrounded by lush green grass and foliage, through the center of Spring Bloom. Boys in button down shirts and long pants and girls in light colored, pastel dresses lined the walkways when Lilika and Jet got closer and closer to their destination. Lilika walked along with a solemn expression on her face.

She couldn’t help but think about the golden woman, whether she’d simply imagined her or if their conversation had really happened. What did it mean? She couldn’t tell Jet or their mother or father. They wouldn’t believe her. Something was actually happening to her for a change.

The sun cast bright light over all the individual stone cottages and gardens.

“Good morning, Lilika!” Mr. Woodland waved from his garden.

“Good morning.” Lilika hurried toward school.

“Lil! Slow down,” Jet said.

“Come on,” she said with pursed lips, “we’re going to be late.”

More and more residents filtered out of their houses, tending to their gardens, trimming their bushes, and cleaning windows of their homes. With every stone cottage Lilika passed, the people smiled and waved. She greeted everyone with a wave and picked up her pace once she reached the hill.

Standing in front of the school, she paused and caught her breath before opening the classroom door.

“So, do you want to do something after school? Maybe we can go for a walk or something.”

Bryony stopped her just outside the door. Lilika had been friends with her for as long as she could remember.

“Oh, I can’t.” Lilika sighed. “I have to do my chores right away when I get home since I didn’t have time to do all of them this morning.”

“Well, I found something I thought you might be interested in.” Bryony pulled out a big book from her backpack and wiped the dust off of it.

Lilika whipped her head around. “What? What is that?”

“It’s called The History of Winter in the Soul.” Bryony moved her fingers along the raised gold title on the front. “It’s all about Wits.” Bryony opened it and read from the book. “It was a cold that could only manifest out of the coldness in the soul. That is how Wits got to be known as the Winter in the Soul.”

“What are you doing?” Violet butted in. Great, she was always putting her nose where it didn’t belong.

“Nothing. Keep your voice down.” Lilika glanced toward the window to make sure no one was looking. Leave it to Violet to try and join in with them when they were trying not to bring attention to themselves.

“What do you have there, Bryony?” Violet put her hand on Bryony’s shoulder to get a glimpse.

“Nothing.” Lilika shook her head.

“Well, what is it? What’s so interesting?” Violet leaned in closer.

“Oh, please,” Lilika whispered, “just stop. Someone’s going to see, and then we’ll all be in trouble. Just mind your own business and leave us alone. Go, go on.” Lilika waved her hand at Violet.

“Fine.” Violet rolled her eyes and stormed off.

“Bryony, you really shouldn’t have that book. Where did you get it anyway?”

“I found it under my parent’s bed. Aren’t you curious about Wits?”

“I am, but…”

“But what?”

The golden locket popped into Lilika’s head. Who was she to tell Bryony not to ask questions about Wits? She had questions of her own.

“Nothing, come on, we’d better get inside. We’re going to be late.”

Bryony shoved the book back inside her backpack and followed Lilika into school.

Blog Tour/Review: Mechanized Masterpieces 2: An American Anthology

AUTHOR BIO
A day-dreamer at heart, M. Irish Gardner has dabbled in imaginary worlds from Day One and developed an incurable addiction when she finally began recording her ideas. Her bachelor’s degree in recreation management does nothing for her writing, but she sure knows how to play. She lives in Arizona with her husband, two daughters, and all the characters in her head. Gardner’s first published work, “Reformation,” appeared in A Dash of Madness: A Thriller Anthology.

Q/A for M. Irish Gardner

1. Please share how you came up with the concept for your story?
This is actually the first time I've started a story without a full concept in mind. I found Emily Dickinson's poem, "A Charm Invests a Face", and decided to create a story around that. Cyborgs are popular in steampunk. And everyone loves a good gypsy character, so I rolled with it.

2. Please name some of your other published works?
My only other work is "Reformation" in A Dash of Madness, released June 2013.

3. What is your preferred writing genre?
I have found that every story I write must have some element of romance in it!

4. And preferred reading genre?
I love stories that incorporate romance, adventure, suspense, and fantasy, all in one neat little (or big) bundle!

5. What are your top 3 favorite books?
The Count of Monte Cristo, Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter series

6. Do you have any particular writing habits?
I like to use alliteration, if that's what you mean. I also tend to mix up idioms...

7. Do you have a playlist that you created while writing your story?
Nope. I've learned that my words sound much better than they actually are when music is playing. I have to work in silence so I really "hear" the words.

8. Panster or plotter?
Short stories - pantser. Full-novels - plotter.

9. Advice for writers?
Read, then practice. Read, then practice. And don't give up.

10. What's up next for you?
I have a non-fiction piece I'm just wrapping up. It's about a woman who became very ill while pregnant with her second child and spent three months in the hospital. When she left, she was a triple amputee and blind. She's been wanting to write her story for six long years, so I was really happy that she asked me to help her. I'm hoping her book will be released in 2015, but we still haven't finalized a publisher.

M. Irish Gardner's Favorite Things:

- Quote
"Falling flat on your face is still moving forward."

- TV show
Oh, too hard to choose! I love The Musketeers, Firefly, Vikings, Alaska: The Last Frontier, Chuck, Dexter, Lost, Sherlock, Downton Abbey, New Girl, and many more. Maybe I should watch less and write more!

- Comic book character
I've always had a thing for Batman.

- Movie
The Last of the Mohicans

- Book
The Count of Monte Cristo

- Candy bar
Three Musketeers

- Junk food
I'm a total sucker for Starbucks hot chocolate and their slow roasted ham and swiss!

- Place you visited
I was blown away by the Washington coast last summer, but I think Havasu Falls, AZ still beats them all!

- Restaurant
I love good comfort food, so I have many Italian, Mexican, and American favorite places to eat. I had fantastic Indian food last spring in California, though!

- Island
No man is a...?

I haven't read a lot of steampunk so decided that a collection of short stories would be a good way to give it a try. The one that sounded the most interesting to me was this one, Invested Charm, by M. Irish Gardner. It's based on an Emily Dickinson poem.

The main character, Mauve, lives with her Uncle Wally. When she was 14, her mother, father and younger sister were killed when their house caught on fire. She sustained injury as well and now has a half mechanical face which her uncle created for her. She's now 22 and able to manipulate future events.

We're then shown how her gift (curse?) works and learn she's being investigated by Inpsector Warrick. He seems familiar to her yet she's never met him. We learn more about her life before the fire and the memories she has of her life during that time. As the story progresses, truths are revealed and leaves her with decisions to make.

I enjoyed this story. Mauve feels like she doesn't have anything else to lose in life and that makes her more brave. Uncle Wally is her creator and the only family she has left so they are close. It's a darker romance than I usually read so I was glad that it was short and some of the seedier details were left out.  I loved the ending!!

My Rating=4.5 Stars

If these stories sound intriguing to you, be sure to check out the other stops on the tour and learn more about the authors! Come back tomorrow and I'll share my thoughts on the next story in this book, Payoff for Air Pirate Pete by D. Lee Jortner.
