Blog Tour/Review: Blood Crown by Ali Cross

About BLOOD CROWN: Androids have claimed power over what remains of the human race. They rule without remorse. They are the Mind and humans exist only to serve them.

But it wasn't always so.

Before the android uprising, select droids, called Servants, were pivotal in engineering a new human race with nanotechnology enhanced DNA. The Blood Crown theorum was to be humanity's crowning glory and the key to their survival in deep space.

But Serantha, Daughter of the West, was the last female to receive Gifts from her Servant and when the Mind mutinied, she was hidden away, and presumed dead.

Without Serantha there is no hope of the Blood Crown being realized so Nicolai, Son of the East, abandons his crown to join the rebel forces. He might not provide the future for his people he had once dreamed of, but he will not go down without a fight.

When Nicolai discovers Sera among a small compliment of kitchen staff, everything changes--but Sera's Gifts were never completed and she is ill-equipped to face a legion of androids determined to wipe her, and every other human, out of existence.

Their only hope is the Blood Crown--but even if Serantha and Nicolai can realize their potential it may be too late to save mankind.

Release date: February 28, 2014

This story is told from three points of view: Archibald, Nicolai and Serantha. Archibald is Serantha's Servant, created to serve her until she dies. He wasn't part of the android uprising, but when it happened, he saved her and shut off his connection to her, leading others to believe she was dead. The story begins nine years later and Archibald is starting to receive information from Sera again. Galen, his one-time friend and traitor, believes that Sera is alive and is using Archibald to get the information he needs.

Nicolai abandoned his crown to join the rebels and tries to convince his father to join as well. He and Sera were close once but since he believes her to be dead, he doesn't see any reason to stick around.

Sera works in the kitchen of a ship. She has no memory of who she really is. She fights off advances of the guards when she's not scrubbing dishes. She is tired of the life she's living and when she's had enough, she makes a decision which will change everything.

I enjoyed this book! Sera's chapters were the longest so we hear the most from her. I was lost somewhat in the beginning but as Sera started piecing her past together, my interest was piqued. When Nicolai appears, she has no idea who he is at first. As her memory returns, they grow closer but they have trust issues to work through. The romance is sudden, but as the Blood Crown is explained, it makes sense and works. There are villains to dislike and good, likable side characters that add to the story. If you enjoy fast-paced science fiction (in space!) with romance and fairy tale elements, then this is a book you will enjoy!

Content: Unwanted groping, intense kissing (neither of them are graphic)

Blog Tour/Review & Giveaway: Porcelain Keys by Sarah Beard

Porcelain Keys, by Sarah Beard
2014, 352p, Young Adult Contemporary Romance
My Rating=5+ Stars
Source: Received copy from publisher for an honest review

Aria's life is full of secrets--secrets about her mother's death, her father's cruelty, and her dream to go to Juilliard. When Aria meets Thomas, he draws out her secrets, captures her heart, and gives her the courage to defy her father. But when tragedy strikes and Thomas disappears, Aria is left alone to transform her broken heart's melody into something beautiful. Porcelain Keys is a captivating love story that will resonate long after the last page is turned.

Aria's mother died a few years ago and her father doesn't want any reminders of her so they don't talk about her and the music room is locked shut. Aria likes to break in when her father is gone but if he catches her when he comes home and he's drunk, she's in trouble. She can run faster than him so she heads to their neighbors treehouse when that happens and that is where she meets Thomas one night. He is so kind to her and becomes her friend. She doesn't need to worry about a relationship with him because he told her he doesn't date, but doesn't fill in the details (at least not right away). They do start to care about each other but soon tragedy strikes and he disappears. How will Aria move on with Thomas no longer in her life?

This book is amazing!! It shows the power of music, friendship, love and second chances. I loved Aria and Thomas and how their relationship helped each other get through difficult circumstances. Thomas encouraged her to chase after her dream and helped her find a way to make it happen.

Nathaniel, Vivian and Devin were great secondary characters and I liked her relationships with each of them as well. Nathaniel helped her fulfill her Juilliard dream and provided her with safety. I loved how Vivian came over to help her prepare for the dance and acted as her fairy godmother. Devin grew on me and I was glad he was able to befriend her and help her through a rough time.

This book is an emotional roller coaster. I was happy and sad, I laughed and I cried, and the ending was perfect! There are quite a few secrets and as they are revealed, her father's behavior makes more sense (even though how he behaved is still not okay). This is a book I highly recommend and will definitely read again. I only have one warning: Once you start, it will be almost impossible to put down!

Blog Tour/Review: Podium Finish by Beth Pond

Tour Schedule

Podium Finish

With six months until the Olympic Games, seventeen-year-old Harper’s life is pretty much perfect. She’s fighting for the starting spot on Team USA Women’s Hockey, and for the first time ever, she has a crush on a guy who likes her back. She feels like the luckiest girl in the world, until she runs a risky play at practice and breaks her knee, thereby sentencing herself to six weeks in a cast and possibly ending her Olympic dream before it even starts.

For seventeen-year-old Alex, being anything less than the best is unacceptable. That’s why, after a miserable debut season at the senior level, the former junior national singles champion switches to ice dance. Her skating partner, Ace, is an “all skating all the time” type of guy, which would be fine, if he’d stop keeping secrets about the real reason he and his former partner broke up. Now is not the time for second thoughts, but how can Alex skate her best if she can’t trust her partner…or herself?

As the pressure to make the Olympic team builds, the girls must rely on each other, because if there’s one thing they both know, it’s that the only thing harder than skating to the top is staying there.

I love the Olympics! And I think Olympians are amazing! When I saw this book come up for review so close to the Winter Olympics, I knew I had to read it. Harper and Alex have been roommates at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center for the past year. They've also become friends who support and rely on each other to get them through the tough days.

The book switches POV between Harper and Alex. Harper is working hard to gain a starting spot on the women's hockey team and the competition is fierce. She has some friends and she has a nemesis named Jess. They have a hard time working together because they each want to shine separately. She breaks her knee one day and has to work extra hard to come back in time to play in the Olympics.

Alex was a singles skater doing well until she had a bad year. Her dad wanted her to switch to ice dancing so she'd have a chance to be in the Olympics. She did, and she's now partners with Ace. Ace is a champion skater who recently split up with his dance partner, Sophie. Alex and her dad want Ace to do more interviews and be more involved in social media, but he's not interested in the fame at all. Alex does a video chat with her parents once a week and when things aren't going well, her relationship with her father is strained.

This was fun to read as each girl worked hard to make it into the Olympics. There were challenges and setbacks for each of them. Harper got her first boyfriend, Rye, and she needed to figure out how to balance that relationship as well. Alex wanted to know what happened to break up Ace and Sophie's skating partnership and kept pushing him for answers. I enjoyed reading about Harper's games and Alex's competitions and the discipline they each had to continue to do their best. I felt bad when things didn't go their way and cheered them on when they were in the midst of competing. It was hard to put this book down because I wanted to know what was going to happen next!

I enjoyed this book and look forward to more from Beth Pond in the future! And I am now officially in the mood to watch the Olympics (too bad they don't start tomorrow)!

Blog Tour/Review: Rook by Stella MacDonald

Tour Schedule

Rook

Could you be the monster to save who you love?

Two women, separated by generations, must leave what they know to start a new life. Seventeen-year-old Kate’s senior year is ruined when she’s moved from the only home she’s ever known. After an isolating month alone in her apartment, school starts, but neither her classmates nor her teacher are who they seem. Kali, a single mother living in the nineteenth century wilds of Montana, is stalked by a malicious past. She fights to keep her daughter safe while her freedom is threatened by her less than benevolent benefactor. Both find love, and with it hope, but that is quickly ripped away as one woman must learn the lessons of the other — before it’s too late to save either.

This story switches back and forth between Kali and Kate. The Prologue starts with Kali and all we know is that something bad happened to her and Emily promised her to keep someone safe. Then we meet Kate, who has just moved and is attending her new school for the first time. She's feeling like an outcast. She's given an assignment in art class to talk to two other people in the classroom, learn about them and mix their story with hers. Nobody seems willing to be her partner until Chase and his friend Chris come over and are interested in getting to know her better. Chase is good-looking and he seems to like her but she's not sure about him. Chase offers to give Kate a ride home and when she gets there, her friend Sean is there. She's excited to see him and things quickly become awkward between the three of them.

We also learn more about Kali. She has a daughter, Nelly. We learn that they seem to be nervous about a man Nelly calls Mr. Christian and that Kali has a unique gift. It takes longer to learn more about Kali--her background, why she and Nelly live where they do, who Emily is and who Christian is.

This book was quite suspenseful. Kate and Kali each had a guy they were interested in and a guy that was interested in them. I knew from the summary that their lives had to connect somehow but I was at a loss as to how that would be possible. As the story progressed, a unique element was introduced and as some of the pieces fell into place, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough! This is a book that's hard to explain and just needs to be experienced. The ending definitely left me wanting more!

There is a short story, Pawns, which is a prequel, and I would recommend reading that as well. It introduces Leslie, who takes a while to show up in this book and another character. Reading Pawns first helped me decide quickly who I was rooting for in Rook. It also turned Leslie into a more sympathetic character when I already knew her background so I didn't hate her like I notice quite a few other people did. You can learn more about Pawns here.

Excerpt

Is that him? Is he back?

My legs jerked, kicking and twitching me around to face the sound. I managed to roll slightly, knocking against a soft, solid object at my feet. It grunted weakly, and immediately I recoiled as though I had been bitten. Squinting, I stared, willing my eyes to find light in the dark, but there was nothing.

The sound of the runner drew closer, as if they would trample me any moment. A dim, swaying light appeared through the trees, burning away the inky edges of the deep shadows. When light and sound were almost upon me, branches above me snapped, spraying me in a shower of dried pine needles and snow.

Blog Tour/Review: Sparks the Matchmaker by Russell Elkins

Tour Schedule

Sparks the Matchmaker by Russell Elkins

Ollie just wants one thing. The girl.

Things haven’t been going so well with Anne lately, though; their relationship has become a perpetual study date, and Ollie’s roommates are starting to worry about him. How to fix things? Why, with a marriage proposal, of course.

Unfortunately for Ollie, his relationship with Anne has run out of gas. Life feels like it’s counting down to one. And that one is the only person in Ollie’s life he really cares about: Ollie. Perhaps, then, he should get over himself. But first he has to deal with Sparks, the irritating little Yankees fan who invades his life in order to “help” him. And while Keith, his best friend, is doing all he can to help, Ollie’s other friend Richie never fails to show up and threaten to ruin everything just by being himself. Never mind all the drama Sparks brings to the party by forcing Ollie to take a job actually helping people in need.

Will Ollie meet the girl? Will it be in history class? On a road trip to Colorado? Can he get over Anne, or should he try to mend the relationship? Should he pursue the new girl Sparks is trying to set him up with? As the strings of the puppeteer tangle with the strings of the heart, only one person can sort out the mess Ollie has made. It seems that the harder he tries, the more Ollie messes things up. Is Sparks a cruel manipulator, or is he really going to help Ollie find his match?

Ollie's relationship with his girlfriend, Anne, isn't going well so to help it, he decides to propose to her. But before he can, she proposes that they take a break for a while. She knew he was going to propose marriage to her because his roommate let it slip a few days before and that's not the direction she wants to go with him. He's devastated and on his way home, his car runs out of gas. A guy named Sparks stops to help him and tells him his situation will all be good in the end. Ollie blows off Sparks and starts to walk home but Sparks follows him and tells him he's there to help. Ollie finally decides to give Sparks a chance and his life will never be the same.

This is a fun, entertaining read! I find it interesting to read clean romance novels from a male perspective. Ollie was far from being the perfect guy which made the story realistic; he actually starts out not being very likable. Having someone like Sparks around, not so realistic, but entertaining to read. Their relationship made me laugh a lot. Sparks helps Ollie with his love life but makes Ollie work for it and doesn't hand him all the answers.

Ollie does some things he doesn't want to and starts a job he's not thrilled with but through doing those things, I saw Ollie grow and change and become more likable. Ollie had a lot to juggle and it seemed like all he accomplished was to make a mess of everything. The romance took a turn that I wasn't expecting and I loved the ending! It's satisfying and I'm looking forward to learning more about Sparks in book two!

My Rating=5 Stars

Praise for Sparks the Matchmaker:

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. How many “romance” novels do you read where the protagonist is male, or even where the author is male? At first, I thought that was going to be the unique focus of this story.

I was pleasantly surprised, though. The “Sparks” character was a completely unique take on things. Also, I tend to be one of those people who frequently predicts the endings of books and t.v. shows, etc., but I hadn’t seen the ending of this story coming. It was a quick and easy read (which was just what I needed right now) but with plenty of intelligence and creativity woven into the story. I think I can say with confidence that even my teenage son would enjoy it, as well as my Mom. Looking forward to the next installment in the series.

Definitely not what I expected from a romantic comedy novel, but in a good way! Can’t wait for the next one :)

Excerpt:

Ollie sat in his history class thinking about his future. His eyes darted from one pretty face to another, wondering which girl Sparks would be setting him up with. Sparks, who sat next to him, was smug. He had expected Sparks to have informed him by the time class started, but that didn’t happen. Of course. He’s maximizing his investment in my misery.
The professor began talking about Tiananmen Square. Ollie decided he couldn’t wait any longer. He put the back of his hand to his mouth and whispered out the side of it, “Tell me who.”
“What? I can't hear you.”
A little louder, “Who’s the girl?”
“Huh? Speak up.”
Ollie pretended he was clearing his throat. “AH-Who?!” People heard him that time, and some turned to give him looks. He flushed crimson.
“I was just kidding,” Sparks said. “I heard you the first time.”
“Jerk.” Ollie said it much too loudly. Half the class, including the professor, stopped to look at him. “Sorry,” he said. “Those Chinese army guys were jerks. You know,” he gestured to the slideshow image of the student confronting the tank in Tiananmen Square.
Class went on.
Sparks leaned in. “That's not going to help you catch the girl. She heard you loud and clear with that one.”
Ollie forgot about the history lesson and scanned the room again. She must be sitting somewhere close. He knew she would have to be attractive, or Sparks would never feel confident in what he was doing. In thirty seconds he narrowed his investigation down to two suspects.
He looked at Sparks and then pointed to a beautiful curly- haired brunette one row in front of him and 4 chairs to the right. He raised his eyebrows as if to ask, Is it her?
Sparks nodded, and Ollie felt a jolt of excitement run through him. He wasn’t sure whether or not Sparks would tell him who the girl was, even if he guessed right. He felt like something was going to happen in his favor for once. His future finally had a face. And it’s gorgeous! A smile spread itself luxuriantly across his face.
He spent the rest of his class time studying. But not history.
He carefully observed the way she chewed her bottom lip as she concentrated. He memorized every curl in her long brown hair. He took mental notes on every tiny detail.
Hearing other students start to rustle around, Ollie looked up at the clock and saw that the bell was soon to ring. Ollie didn't move. There was only one person in the class who was still listening to the lecture and she was the only other person who hadn't begun to pack up her books, waiting for the bell to ring. So he sat and studied her some more.
“You're going to need to stall a little,” Sparks said after the bell finally rang. “She's planning on sticking around after class to ask the professor something.”
“I'm going to meet her right now?” He was getting nervous.
Ollie waited just outside the classroom, trying to look nonchalant. He watched as students from other rooms and lecture halls began pouring into the hallway. He was tall enough to be able to monitor the many heads tightly packing in together as the stream of students gradually grew larger and larger, flowing toward the exits. From his vantage point he eventually saw a familiar curly brown head slip into the stream, so he bravely dove into the current that swept toward the doors where it opened up outside into an ocean of college students.

Book Review: Warrior Beautiful by Wendy Knight

Warrior Beautiful, by Wendy Knight
Published Oct. 15, 2013 by Astraea Press
203p, YA Fantasy
My Rating=4.5 Stars
Source: Provided copy by publisher for an honest review

Working with the ex you secretly love to save the souls of the innocent is almost as bad as working with a mighty battle unicorn who would be thrilled to watch you plummet to your death.

Scout is used to pain. Her body has been broken, her heart has been broken, and the only thing keeping her together is her relationship with her younger sister. Lil Bit believes in unicorns and terrifying monsters she calls soul stealers. But unicorns and monsters aren’t real…are they?

When Lil Bit falls prey to the mysterious disease sweeping the country, Scout has two options – believe the doctors who say it’s a pandemic or believe Lil Bit, who says it’s the soul stealers. She chooses her sister and goes looking for the unicorns who are supposed to save them. What she finds aren’t the cute pastel mythical creatures she expects. Battle unicorns are big and tough and full of attitude. Who knew?

Unicorns are real and so are the monsters. Soul stealers are reaping the souls of the innocent, and the unicorns are fighting to stop them. But to save the world, they need the help of humans – the enemy they’re dying to protect. And first to sign up for the fight is the ex-boyfriend Scout’s heart won’t stop loving, no matter how determined she is to hate him.

Trey and Scout used to be the "it" couple. Until the accident. And Trey broke her heart. She's now back in school and he's trying to make amends but she wants nothing to do with him. Because it hurts too much. And he has a new girlfriend, anyway--Kylin. The only person Scout wants to be close to is her younger sister, Lil' Bit. There's a pandemic sweeping the country and it finds Scout's and Trey's families but they are able to escape with the help of unicorns. Kylin comes, too, which adds extra fun to the mix. As they learn the truth about what's happening and how to stop it, will they be able to do what needs to be done?

Scout is in a lot of pain, both physically and emotionally. I feel for her and want her to be happy. The unicorns aren't able to heal her completely because she's got so much anger and bitterness inside. I really liked what she was able to learn about forgiveness towards the end of the book.

The unicorns are amazing! I'm not usually interested in unicorn stories but I loved Feudlings so much that I decided to give this a try. I'm glad I did. There is some conflict between Scout and her unicorn, Ashra, which was humorous at times. I enjoyed reading about their relationship as much as her relationship with Trey.

Trey is a confused guy, haha. I understand why Scout is so upset with him and feels love/hate towards him. He makes some typical teenage guy choices and finds himself in a mess that he wants out of but isn't sure how to go about doing it. We get the story from his POV at times so we know how he's really feeling and it isn't difficult to figure out what he will ultimately do. It will be interesting to see what happens next in their relationship.

Warrior Beautiful is a fun book to read and one I would recommend, no matter how you feel about unicorns. The ending sets up the second book nicely and I'm looking forward to hearing when that book will be released!

Excerpt:

She tipped her head, and the candlelight glinted against her silky, honey-brown waves. Her hair had always been his undoing. When they’d been together, he couldn’t keep his hands away from her hair. Or her face. Her lips, her eyes…

“What was that on your shoulder?” She was speaking and he had to drag his mind away from the past and try to figure out what she was saying.

“My shoulder?”

She crossed the short space between them, hesitating, and touched his shoulder. “Here.”

He nearly choked. She wasn’t supposed to see that. But now the sea foam-green eyes were watching him with open curiosity and her lips were parted... he couldn’t tell her ‘no’. Not then, not now, not ever. He looked away, staring at the floor as he rolled the black sleeve of his shirt.

“Forgive me,” she read in a whisper, her finger tracing the hard black letters tattooed on his arm. Without looking from the words, she said, “When did you get this?”

“After… while you… before you left the hospital.” His entire body shook against her soft touch as she traced the ‘F’ again. Did she realize what she did to him? What she still did to him, even after all this time? No other girl had ever affected him the way she did with just the barest touch of her fingertip.

Wendy Knight was born and raised in Utah by a wonderful family who spoiled her rotten because she was the baby. Now she spends her time driving her husband crazy with her many eccentricities (no water after five, terror when faced with a live phone call, etcetera, etcetera). She also enjoys chasing her three adorable kids, playing tennis, watching football, reading, and hiking. Camping is also big: her family is slowly working toward a goal of seeing all the National Parks in the U.S.

You can usually find her with at least one Pepsi nearby, wearing ridiculously high heel for whatever the occasion may be. And if everything works out just right, she will also be writing.

As she and her father are traveling to meet Desmond's uncle, Lord Ramiro, her father asks her to keep her heritage a secret (she's half-elf, half-human). She also learns that her father is guarding a secret. They're attacked by men who want her killed and her father taken alive, but he jumps in front of the sword meant for her and his dying words are for her to go to her brother and tell him the sun has set and the morning star is forever locked in stone. When she finds her brother, she is met with another surprise and more secrets.

She meets Kael, her brother's best friend, and they end up taking a trip with Vain, a prince, and Desmond, her betrothed. They don't all get along which makes for some humorous discussions among them. There is lots of adventure and life-threatening situations. They do look out for each other, though, and yes, they are all keeping secrets from each other. Ayianna makes a big decision at the end and I'm looking forward to reading more!

I like Ayianna overall, though at times she's frustrating. She seems to fluctuate between being wimpy and strong but I think some of her wimpiness comes from losing her family so suddenly and not knowing who to trust. Desmond doesn't seem right for her. He seems like a nice enough guy to her and she feels that she needs to trust that her parents saw something in him that she has yet to discover. His secret is a doozy, so it will be interesting to see what happens when that one is exposed.

Kael is awesome! He lets her in on some of his secrets towards the end and she is confused by what she feels for him. He's closed his heart to love but will Ayianna help him open it back up again? Vain, the prince, is actually the one we know the least about. Hopefully we will learn more about him in future books.

I read The Tales of Nalu before I read Secrets Kept and I thought it helped with background, especially with Semine, the powerful sorceress they're up against. It also helped me get a feel for the world I was about to discover. I would recommend reading those as well. If you enjoy fantasy, this is the beginning of a great series and I'm personally looking forward to reading the next book!

My Rating=5 Stars

Kael, some say he is a half-elf, but he never knew his mother. His father was one of the Lords of the elven council and never spoke about her. Kael was determined to follow the path of his father until tragedy struck. Not once, but twice, losing his wife, his son, and his sister.  He vows to never love again and ponders accepting the High Guardian’s recommendation to join the Circle.

Blog Tour: Illuminating Gracie by Lisa C. Temple

Tour Schedule

Illuminating Gracie by Lisa C. Temple

As an old woman’s lifeless body lies on a cold stone floor, her soul stands before an angel who offers her a miraculous opportunity: the chance to do it all again. But that is easier said than done. In order to change the path her life has taken, she must put aside years of self-loathing and pain, so she can help the young girl she once was become the woman she should have been.

At 17 years old, Grace Bennett is a bitter young woman. Though blessed with a loving family, looks and brains to spare, she hides her light under a bushel, spending most of her time in the darkness of her mind with little more than sarcasm and self-pity to keep her company.

But things are about to change for Grace. While delivering food for her family’s bed and breakfast, she turns onto a desolate dirt road and drives straight into her destiny.
It’s on this isolated country lane that the damaged girl meets a strangely familiar old couple and two mysterious young men. Together the group fights the demons that surround Grace, and they teach her what it means to let her light shine.

“Illuminating Gracie” is, at once, a metaphorical tale of the fight between good and evil and a spiritual saga of one girl’s journey from darkness into the light. If you liked “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games,” you will love the story of Gracie.

This is one of those books that the longer it sits with me, the more I like it! While I was reading it, there were parts that I absolutely loved and highlighted, especially near the beginning. Then it took a strange turn, yet that part was still essential to the story. It ended strong, though, and I enjoyed getting some questions answered. Finally, there was the Epilogue which was unsettling but has me wanting to read the next book asap.

I enjoyed Gracie's relationships. She met two good-looking guys, Locke and Merchison, who were both vying for her attention. They are also keeping secrets from her and she wants to find out what they are. She's not sure which one she can trust and feels confused. I definitely had my favorite and after some other things are revealed, she ends up with the one I want her with. However, they are both young and still have a lot to go through so I'm hoping they can make it to the end.

I also enjoyed Willem and Mrs. B. They were mysterious and odd and hard for Gracie to figure out. They gave Gracie some good advice but, like the guys, she wasn't exactly sure if she could trust them. We were given enough hints throughout the story to figure out who they were and I enjoyed the reveal to Gracie and her subsequent "illumination." Gracie has a good sense of humor, too, and her internal conversations were fun to read.

This is a great story illustrating good vs. evil and second chances. Gracie learns what her relationship is to everyone else and it will be interesting to see where the story goes from here. Gracie is young so will she stay on the path she's currently on which will change the course of her life or will she fall back into old, familiar patterns? I'm looking forward to finding out!

My Rating=4.5 Stars (I originally gave it 4 stars but after thinking about it more, decided it's worth 4.5)

Excerpt:

Because he was an angel, Lochedus carried the power of life and death in his touch. With the wave of his hand, he could calm an angry sea or rain down terrible destruction on the heads of the guilty. He could grant peace to the troubled and visit devastating disease on the deserving. But no matter how hard he tried he could not, that night, pull himself from the depression that threatened to tear him apart. It had taken the touch of a small boy to do what a mighty angel could not and the far- reaching fallout from the child’s selfless act would echo throughout eternity.

Through the years, Lochedus had checked in on the boy, quietly keeping vigil – never speaking, only watching. Not one time did the boy acknowledge his existence or seem to see him again. Not even in his darkest hours did he call out for help. That is, until tonight. The boy, now an old man, didn’t beg for his own soul, but for the soul of another – the one he loved most in the world. And now, the angel would move Heaven and Earth – and Hell if he had to – to help the one to whom he owed so much.

Praise for Illuminating Gracie:

“A well-paced fantasy story of redemption and self-improvement.” ~Kirkus Review (Sept. 1, 2013 Magazine)

“Just the right amount of love story to the action packed plot line left this book a perfectly balanced read.” ~Maryann (Amazon “Top 1000” Reviewers)

“The story also contains little mysteries that keep you turning the pages, as gems of insight turn up along the way. It is a story of hope and redemption, and a beautiful request of each of us to let our light shine brightly.”  ~Kimberly Raadt Higgins (Amazon Review)

“On a personal level, I can relate to Grace in so many ways. As I read, a lot of memories and feelings from my teenage and young adult years have come flooding back, some a little painful, others fun and exciting, even hopeful. Yet it also has me contemplating where I am today as a middle-aged adult; am I who I thought I would be, who I want to be?” ~N.J. Collar (Amazon Review)

“The plot is masterfully drawn and keeps the reader guessing until the end. This book tells the story of the fight between good and evil in a young woman’s life. It is brilliant in its use of humor and emotion to draw the reader into the characters.” J. Pitts (Amazon and Goodreads)

Author Lisa C. Temple

On thirty-nine Senior scrolls, the Headmaster of author, Lisa C. Temple’s, small, private school wrote “Good Luck and best wishes for a prosperous future!” On the fortieth and final scroll, which was Temple’s, the Headmaster penned the words, “Lisa, I can’t wait to see to what use you put your unusual talents!” Temple spent the next 30 years trying to assuage her former leader’s curiosity – and her own.

She sold BMWs in her hometown of Montgomery, Alabama, and hillbillies (as a booking agent) in Nashville, Tennessee. In an effort to escape the enforced servitude of the Junior League, she even attended and was graduated from law school and passed the Alabama State Bar exam in 2002. Through it all, she battled problems and illnesses, many of her own making. But, it wasn’t until her father – her hero – was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS), that Temple found her true calling – the “talent” that she finds joy in putting to use.

“Illuminating Gracie,” is loosely autobiographical and born from a desire to, if only, metaphorically right the wrongs of Temple’s own past. It tells the story of a miserable old woman who is given the opportunity – by an angel – to go back in time and help the young girl she once was become the woman she should have been. “Illuminating Gracie,” is the first book in a four-book series. The second book, “Instigating Gracie,” is due for release in December 2013.

Temple laughs when saying she has a loving and complicated husband she deserves, and a wonderful son and two loving stepchildren that she does not. She also shares her life with her beloved pets: Pomeranian, Phebe; Bordernese, Flash; and Tabby cat, MInx.

Book Review: Shedding Light on the Dark Side by Stephen J. Stirling

Shedding Light on the Dark Side: Defeating the Forces of Evil, by Stephen J. Stirling
2013, 128p, LDS Non-Fiction
My Rating=5 stars
Source: Received copy from publisher for an honest review

It is time to rip the mask from the master of deceit.

Using the scriptures and modern revelation, Stephen Stirling defines who Satan is and what his role is on this earth. In a way that is engaging and perfect for youth to understand, he evaluates:

• What the scriptures say that Satan is and does
• Where Satan gets his power and why it influences us
• How to be better soldiers in the war Satan is waging on this world

We can overcome this deceiving yet unavoidably real being with the light of truth. The Prince of Peace holds the power to defeat the Prince of Darkness. The only question is where you will stand in this eternal battle of good and evil. Shedding Light on the Dark Side will help you understand the Adversary and his tactics so you can fearlessly stand on the Lord’s side.

Whenever you're engaged in battle, it's always good to know the enemy so you can figure out what strategy to use to defeat them. There have been times in my life when I felt like Satan was winning the war against me and it would be easier to give in than to continue fighting. In those times, something always seems to happen to help me keep going and turn to Christ. At that point, life always improves!

This book is packed with scriptures and quotes from General Authorities, past and present. I highlighted so many sections so I can go back and reference them as I need to. The main point I felt the author tried to get across is that Satan is, indeed, real and his objective is to destroy the world by taking us down individually. Because of choices he made, he's miserable and wants us to feel the same.

This book is not all doom and gloom, though. There is a winning formula and it is outlined in this book. There are things we can do here and now to win the battle. We each have our agency and are able to choose for ourselves who we will follow. This book says it's a guide for Youth and Young Adults, but I still learned plenty and it's a great resource to use in the future. I highly recommend this book to Youth, Young Adults and Adults!

Stephen J. Stirling was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in the Southeast LA semi-ghetto of Huntington Park. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from Brigham Young University in 1976, and then spent the next several years wandering America in search of adventure as a professional vagrant. Interspersed through his college career and days on the road, he served a mission in Chile and taught for 5 years as an early morning seminary teacher in various ports of call.

Stopping in Chicago, he entered the profession of advertising, a field in which he ultimately held many positions with companies from the Mid West to the Pacific Coast. He eventually settled in Orange County, California, where he established Stirling Communications and spent 15 years as a freelance copywriter, scriptwriter, and video producer. In 1994 he was hired by the Church Educational System and relocated with his family to the Phoenix Valley in Arizona, where he has fulfilled a lifelong dream of teaching released-time seminary for the past 19 years.

He and his wife, Diane, were married in 1981. They have five adult children, two horses, several chickens, and a farm in Adam-Ondi-Ahman, Missouri—where they plan to retire someday.
