When strange connections surface between Allie and the teacher who disappeared over a century ago, everyone in Wildwood, including Allie’s handsome neighbor on the film set, Blake Fulton, seems to be hiding secrets, and Allie doesn’t know who she can trust. If she can’t find the answers in time, history may repeat itself . . . with the most unthinkable results.
I love a good mystery and this book delivered! There are two stories being told, one about Bonnie Rose who lived in 1861 and the other is Allie Kirkland in the present day. Bonnie Rose has had a tough life. She's 18 years old and the only family she has left is her 9-year-old sister Maggie May. She's trying to make life better for both of them and she is able to secure a position as a schoolteacher in Wildwood, Texas.
Allie Kirkland is living in Texas, trying to make a life for herself away from her family in Arizona. She and her best friend, Kim, are trying to get in the newest Mysterious History docudrama miniseries. Kim wants to be a cast member and Allie wants the production assistant's job. They are able to both get on and the details of where exactly they'll be going haven't yet been revealed but they know they'll be gone for three months.
The first part of the book is Allie and Kim's preparations to head out into the wilderness. There are classes to take and lots of organizing to be done. Allie meets mystery man Blake Fulton who is positive he's part of the production but doesn't show up to any mandatory meetings. Who exactly is he? She also ends up being offered a different part in the production which changes things drastically for her.
This is a great mix between Bonnie Rose's life in Wildwood and Allie's summer working on a re-enactment. Something strange happened in Wildwood many years ago and Allie starts digging to find answers. She and Bonnie Rose have a lot in common and not all of it is good. Will Allie be able to figure things out before it's too late? The ending is suspenseful and the reveal surprising.
My only complaint about this is that it's labeled as Christian Romance and I personally thought it was very light on the romance. I would refer to it as a mystery (the small amount of romance would be a bonus!). It is also possible that I was expecting more since I read it close to Valentine's Day. That said, it's clean and it's an intriguing story and one I highly recommend reading!
