Blog Tour: Rebels by Scott & Judith Powell

Tour Schedule

Rebels

The world is on fire. From the ashes like a phoenix rises a new America, one that will save it all. Under one condition; absolute and complete surrender.

The world complies without question. Those who don’t are destroyed. It is in this world, John is born. His very name is treason.

If the New America, now known to everyone as the State, knew what John was, they’d kill him, but instead they give him a gift.

Praise for Rebels

John has a lot of potential (especially for someone so young) in that he sees the flaws in this society. He wants to be like George Washington and knows a lot about the manner in which a government should be run… Highly recommended. ~Amazon Review

This is a book that I have a few issues with, but overall, I really did enjoy it. I love the idea and was excited to read it because it sounds like a book right up my alley. John Hancock Bates is 15 years old and lives in a society where the State tells everyone what to do. Freedom has been lost and the people aren't allowed to talk about society before they took charge (aka the Great Fires). His parents have taught him about the Constitution and the founding fathers and they read together from the Bible. John is also in the Young Army which gives them privileges so he has to walk that fine line. This part was difficult for me to believe. As a 15-year-old, I thought that he might be a little more confused than he is. He seemed pretty firm in his beliefs for someone that is being taught two different philosophies.

I also felt that the story was a bit factual and wanted to be shown more so I would have felt more emotionally involved. For the most part, though, I found the storyline realistic. The history of John's world was interesting and kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. I felt like most of the book was background and it wasn't until the end that something exciting happened. The ending definitely has me looking forward to book 2 and reading more of John's story!

One other note since I know this might bother some people. There are some editing and spelling issues with this book but I hope that doesn't make anyone stop reading it since it is a story worth reading.

My Rating=4 Stars

Excerpt:

But unlike the others, my parents have made me commit to memory the preamble of the Constitution of the United States of America, a document outlawed by the State and every night my father pulls out a very old Bible hidden in a compartment in our wall and we listen to him read aloud its words. If it is found out that we have such a book, the penalty is death, but we read it anyway. Our government is called the State of America and consists of most of the civilized world. I do not know what schools were like before the Great Fires but ours are old and moldy, full to the breaking point with youth and children. The conditions have worsened through the years since the State has taken over and slowly broken down society much like strip mining, leaving nothing in place of what they have taken. In many ways, we are no more than cattle waiting to be taken to the slaughter, only to serve the State and its needs. It is here at school that my life changed forever and I could no longer sit and do nothing while others decided my fate for me.

Book Review: A Nothing Named Silas by Steve Westover

A Nothing Named Silas
A Nothing Named Silas, by Steve Westover
2013, 304p, Dystopia
My Rating=5 stars
Source: Received copy from publisher for an honest review

You are here because the Citizens put you here to serve them and because the Regents choose to control your lives.

In the not-so-distant future, workers are forcibly drafted into their fields. With all their choices made for them, the workers must do what they’re told or face severe consequences. When Labor chooses Silas, the tyrannical Labor Regent is determined to make him a public example of her complete control. He is humiliated, manipulated, and isolated during his first week under the Shield, and the people who show him kindness only help him because they have ulterior motives.

But the Regent is not the only one pulling Silas’s strings. The mysterious Gideon wants to mold him into a hero, a champion of the oppressed people. And a strange girl seems to be guiding him to find out more about the Citizens they serve. Through it all, no one bothers to ask Silas what he wants to do. Because, after all, he doesn’t have any rights. He doesn’t really exist.

Wade through twisted government conspiracies and deeply buried secrets alongside Silas as he learns to choose for himself—and discovers the cost of freedom.

We first meet Silas as he's starting a foot race. His father reminds him how important this is since the Regents are watching and the draft is tomorrow and there is no second place. Silas isn't too concerned because he knows he'll win. The race doesn't go as planned, though, and he doesn't get first place, but still does well. However, he's stunned when he's picked last by Labor instead of picked first by Command, which is hard because he's trained his whole life to be in Command.

We learn more about this world. They're divided into different Divisions to make them efficient and they live under Shields to keep them safe. He has to leave his father and brother and travels to the Labor Shield with Regent Taelori. She's nice to him until they get to the Labor Shield, at which point she decides to make an example of him and he's subject to lots of unpleasantness and confusion at what's happening. He's offered help and is grateful but he's not sure who he can trust.

As time goes on, he learns more about Labor Shield and meets people willing to help him, but is surprised when he finds out their identities. When he learns the truth about who he is and why he's there, his world starts to unravel and he goes looking for answers.

Wow! This is an intense, interesting book and a fantastic beginning to a new dystopian series! I enjoyed the world building and the characters. There's so much to each of them that it's hard to tell what their motivation truly is or what exactly is going on. The only person I could fully trust was Silas. And when Silas found out who he really is, I was stunned (and believe I gasped out loud), and then the book title made total sense. At that point, too, the plot sped up and this book was even harder to put down.

Silas does a lot of observing and I usually like lots of dialog, but found myself engrossed in what he was seeing and learning. Even though he grew up around there, he wasn't familiar with the Labor Shield at all and had to learn new rules, meet new people, and find where he fit in the scheme of things.

This book isn't a light, easy read. It's complex, with twists and turns, conspiracies, betrayal and mistreatment with a graphic scene towards the end. And the ending definitely left me wanting to start book 2 right away. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it! Mr. Westover's other books look good, too and I look forward to reading more of his work!

Blog Tour: Shudder by Samantha Durante

The Highlight Tour with Prism Book Tours

& Samantha's Summer Tour

The second installment in the electrifying Stitch Trilogy, Shudder follows Samantha Durante's shocking and innovative debut with a heart-pounding, paranormal-dusted dystopian adventure sure to keep the pages turning.

Shudder (Stitch Trilogy #2)

Shudder

348 pages

Published June 15, 2013

-- Book 2 in the Stitch Trilogy --

It's only been three days, and already everything is different.

Paragon is behind her, but somehow Alessa's life may actually have gotten worse. In a wrenching twist of fate, she traded the safety and companionship of her sister for that of her true love, losing a vital partner she'd counted on for the ordeal ahead. Her comfortable university life is but a distant memory, as she faces the prospect of surviving a bleak winter on the meager remains of a ravaged world. And if she'd thought she'd tasted fear upon seeing a ghost, she was wrong; now she's discovering new depths of terror while being hunted by a deadly virus and a terrifying pack of superhuman creatures thirsting for blood.

And then there are the visions.

The memory-altering "stitch" unlocked something in Alessa's mind, and now she can't shake the constant flood of alien feelings ransacking her emotions. Haunting memories of an old flame are driving a deep and painful rift into her once-secure relationship. And a series of staggering revelations about the treacherous Engineers - and the bone-chilling deceit shrouding her world's sorry history - will soon leave Alessa reeling...

Oh, my! Dystopia at its finest! A quick word on Stitch (book 1): It had been a while since I'd read what it was about so I just started reading. It seemed like a nice time travel romance with a hint of something else and then BAM!, in came the dystopia element. At that point, I couldn't put it down. And when I got to the end, I was glad I had book 2, Shudder, ready to start.

Shudder takes off right out of the gate and doesn't stop. We get the perspective of different people. First up are the Engineers who are running Paragon. We find out more about their motives and what they are hoping to accomplish (scary!). Then we are taken to one of the rebels who is being punished for her part in the rebellion. We're not sure who she is for a while, though. Next up is Alessa and Isaac, newly reunited, who leave Paragon to try to find a new headquarters for the rebellion. It's not an easy task and there are lots of struggles along the way. And finally, we hear again from a character in Stitch that we haven't heard from in a while who is back in prison. He starts communicating with his neighbor through notes and it's someone we know but don't find out her identity for a while, either.

I loved all the back and forth and it wasn't confusing at all. I had a hard time getting anything done since I just wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next. Hearing lots of different perspectives moved the book along at a fast pace and I was engrossed in this story. The interesting part of dystopia is that the people in charge seem to start out with good intentions but in their quest for control, they forget that most people desire freedom and the chance to live life the way they want so it never turns out well. I enjoy reading about those willing to fight back.

Alessa goes through quite a bit as she struggles with wanting to no longer be involved with the rebellion to her feelings for Isaac as she can't seem to stop thinking about Joe. She also has some physical issues to deal with as she tries to figure out what's happening to her. And then the ending--I was not happy that I didn't have book 3, Stuck, ready to start (there is a sneak peek at the end of Shudder, and I think I will love this one, too). If you are looking for a fantastic dystopian series, this is one I would highly recommend!!

Here's what others are saying about this book:

Praise for Pacing

The tale moved at an even clip until the final chapters where I found myself turning the pages at a frantic pace as all of the threads came together and we moved to the climatic ending. We as the reader are now privy to things the Rebels do not know and the set up for book three created suspense and anticipation. With its powerful world-building this tale has me excited to read the conclusion of this trilogy.

I'm totally captivated by the intense storyline and how the story slowly unravel and explains some lingering questions from Stitch. I love how the author did that and even maintaining the smooth flow of story.

Review at Little Hyuts

Despite how popular dystopian YA has become, Samantha Durante was able to bring something fresh to the genre. This series is in no way cookie cutter dystopian. Shudder jumps right back into the story, taking place only days after book one ended. Fast paced with not a single dull moment, this book will have you turning pages until the end. And believe me you are going to be upset Stuck isn't here yet. I highly recommend this series!

This dystopian/post-apocalyptic sci-fi world still manages to surprise and shock. The pacing is faster and the action scenes had me on the edge of my seat! With plenty of suspense and a downright scary future world, this is a sequel you don’t want to miss!

Review at The Minding Spot

The action, suspense, compelling characters and deftly built world mesh together to create a stunning installment that has me waiting, somewhat impatiently, for the next one!

Also available in the iTunes store, Kobo, and wherever e-books are sold!

Book Review: The Selection by Kierra Cass

The Selection, by Kierra Cass, 2012, 327p
My Rating=5 stars, YA Dystopian
Source: Audiobook borrowed from the library

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself—and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.
(Goodreads)

America Singer doesn't want to enter the Selection since she's in love with Aspen, who she's been secretly dating for the past two years, and thinks the Prince looks stuffy and boring. However, it will help her family financially and they are so excited for her. Aspen also encourages her to try out so she does and, to her surprise, makes the cut.  She automatically becomes a 3 so that puts a further divide between her and Aspen.

She leaves Aspen on a sour note and is heartbroken as she heads to the castle. She meets Prince Maxon and is surprised at how easy he is to talk to and makes a deal with him so he'll keep her around. Prince Maxon is intrigued with her and enjoys her company. She learns about life in the castle and what the rebel attacks mean. She enjoys getting to know the other girls and she especially loves the food!

She's pleasantly surprised as she gets to know Prince Maxon better and starts to have feelings for him but she's still also hung up on Aspen. Can she forget about Aspen? Does she want to? Will she stay or ask to leave?

I listened to the audio for this and loved it!! I used to watch The Bachelor and it has that feel to it, where you can tell the favorites right away and the villain is obvious but always seems to stick around. In this case, though, Prince Maxon is a gentleman and not looking to get in the hot tub or fantasy suite.

I like the three main characters. America is a young girl who is really confused by her feelings. She has Aspen, who she's loved for two years and Maxon, who is easy to talk to and she does start to have genuine feelings for. If she's chosen, she and her family would live comfortably the rest of their lives, and since life hasn't always been easy, that is also a factor for her. I didn't feel like I got to know Aspen enough to form a strong opinion of their relationship, but he seems like a genuinely good guy who is working hard to improve his lot in life. The fact that their relationship was secret had to be difficult when they were with their families or out in public together. Prince Maxon is shy and open and trying to figure out what he's doing. He doesn't have any experience with girls so it's overwhelming to him to choose from the cream of the crop. He opens up to America about his insecurities and is easy to love!

I also enjoyed how America treated her maids and the other girls in the Selection. She gets along well with people but stands up for herself and others when she needs to.

I currently have my favorite and I really don't know which direction America will go. Book 2 recently came out and, from what I've read, she won't make a choice in that book, either, so we'll have to wait for book 3. Since I haven't read a book with a love triangle in a while, I'm actually enjoying that aspect of the book. I have the audio of book 2 on hold so hopefully I'll get it soon, but then I'll have to wait a while for book 3--aagh!! I recommend this to anyone that enjoys a dystopian, bachelor themed book!

The Prince: A Selection Novella by Kierra Cass

2013, 64p, My Rating=4 stars, YA Dystopian
Source: Purchased on Kindle

Before thirty-five girls were chosen to compete in the Selection...

Before Aspen broke America's heart...

There was another girl in Prince Maxon's life...

Don't miss this thrilling 128-page original novella set in the world of the New York Times bestselling novel The Selection. Also features a teaser to The Elite, Kiera Cass's hotly anticipated sequel to The Selection.
(Goodreads)

This was fun to read since we got Prince Maxon's perspective on the process and his life before the girls came. We learn more about who the girls are that have been chosen and what it means for him to choose certain girls.

I probably like Prince Maxon so much because I read this story from his POV. It was fun to read some of the early scenes, like when he met the girls and his reactions to them and where he's at in his thinking. I wish it was a novel, instead of a novella, because it seemed so short and I wanted to hear more from him.

Just who is the girl we learn about and will she appear again later in the story? It seems a little too random for her to not show up again. Will she put a wrench in his plans? Hmm...

Blog Tour: daynight by Megan Thomason

On Tour with Prism Book Tours...

It's time to leave Earth and cross over to the other side... it's not as far away as you think!!

Theme 4 photo Cleaving-Poster_zpsa3d2b451.jpg

by Megan Thomason
Paperback, 324 pages
Published November 26th 2012 by Creatspace

Meet The Second Chance Institute (SCI): Earth’s benevolent non-profit by day, Thera’s totalitarian regime by night. Their motto: Because Everyone Deserves a Second Chance™. Reality: the SCI subjects Second Chancers to strict controls and politically motivated science experiments like Cleaving—forced lifetime union between two people who have sex. Punishment for disobeying SCI edicts? Immediate Exile or death.

Meet Kira Donovan. Fiercely loyal, overly optimistic, and ensnared by the promise of a full-ride college scholarship, Kira signs the SCI Recruit contract to escape memories of a tragedy that left her boyfriend and friends dead.

Meet Blake Sundry. Bitter about being raised in Exile and his mother’s death, Blake’s been trained to infiltrate and destroy the SCI. Current barrier to success? His Recruit partner—Miss Goody Two Shoes Kira Donovan.

Meet Ethan Darcton. Born with a defective heart and resulting inferiority complex, Ethan’s forced to do his SCI elite family’s bidding. Cleave-worthy Kira Donovan catches his eye, but the presiding powers give defect-free Blake Sundry first dibs.

Wow!! I'm really not sure where to start with this one. This book is full of twists and turns and turns and more turns. There's LOTS of secrets, deceit, betrayal, friendship, love, lust, power hungry adults, creepy rules, etc. You name it, this has it (aside from swearing and detailed sex--a plus).

It starts with a party with underage drinking. It's Kira's point of view and she doesn't participate but the party does have a tragic end. After that, the story really takes off. I thought the partying would be done but there are more parties later in the book and they are wild (but again, we aren't privy to graphic details, thank goodness).

The story is told from three points of view: Kira, Blake and Ethan. Each of them have their reasons for keeping secrets from each other and you can definitely see why there are major trust issues going on. Just when I would start to think I had someone figured out, I would learn about a new secret they needed to keep. Yes, they are highly dysfunctional.

Kira is likeable and seems to have a good head on her shoulders. She asks lots of questions. I liked her interaction with both guys, but definitely have a favorite. I was glad we got a glimpse into Blake's mind as he is the hardest for me to figure out. There's still much to learn about him. Ethan is probably in the hardest position because of who his parents are. He's drop-dead gorgeous and Kira meets him at the first party where they hit it off but he disappears and she doesn't find out what happened to him until later.

Megan Thomason has created a very unique world. I can't think of another dystopian book that I've read where the main characters deal so closely with the powers that be on a regular basis and it makes this book more frightening. Each of them are forced to do things they don't want to so they can protect those they love and if they step out of line, the result is tragic. There are some horrific things going on by those who claim to have their best interests at heart, when what they are really after is more power and control while limiting freedom and choice for others.

I started to think it would wrap up somewhat at the end but there's still lots of craziness to come. I really like both Blake and Ethan and I was glad to see that she ends up with my favorite guy...or does she? And I absolutely hate where we left off with the other guy. Still so many questions.

My overall opinion is that it's a great read and will make you think. I'm really looking forward to book 2!

Introducing...  the new Novella:  FREE for the Tour!

clean slate complex
by Megan Thomason

Meet The Second Chance Institute (SCI): Worldwide non-profit and do-gooder organization. Their motto: Because Everyone Deserves a Second Chance at Life(TM). Reality: hidden behind every kind act is a dark agenda designed to gain control and force societal and moral extremes. Currently, the SCI’s pushing Project Liberate, a program to woo the poor and downtrodden into their Clean Slate Complexes—where “everything is provided” from jobs to food, shelter, clothing, and education. Unfortunately, as with all things that sound too good to be true, there’s a catch…

Meet Alexa Knight. Feisty, tough and currently homeless in Los Angeles, Alexa agrees to help the SCI in return for medical care for her sick mother. When she starts to suspect there’s more to the SCI than meets the eye will she believe Adam—the boy who saved her life and the SCI’s biggest champion, or Joshua—the attractive enigma who sings about conspiracy theories and pretends to be someone he’s not?

Full of action, humor, romance, twists and turns, clean slate complex is a companion story to the highly-praised dystopian novel, daynight. It can be enjoyed before or after readingdaynight.

I actually read this book first and I wish I had waited. There are new characters introduced but some of the characters in daynight play a small role and I didn't understand at the time how they related to the overall story. When I finished daynight, I went back and reread the parts where they appeared in clean slate complex so I could try to figure out what was currently going on with them.

As in daynight, Alexa is forced to do things to protect her loved ones. She becomes the poster child for the SCI to show everyone how wonderful they are. I like her and am looking forward to read how she fits in with the rest of the daynight characters and what happens with the two guys she's involved with, Adam and Joshua. I loved this novella so be sure to pick it up while it's free!
