Blog Tour/Review: Another Time for Love by Lynne Larson

Another Time for Love, by Lynne Larson

Salt Lake County, Present Day
Sam Carroll is living life in the fast lane--sleek cars, nice clothes, and lovely ladies have replaced the gospel values he grew up with, and he's going nowhere fast. But when a serious car accident brings his fun to a screeching halt, Sam is left comatose, aware only of his older brother reading aloud from the hundred-year-old journal of an LDS bishop, Moroni Chadester. As Sam drifts in and out of consciousness, the words begin to take root in his mind . . .

Alpine, Utah, 1915
Standing on a dusty mountain road, Sam is bewildered. The cars are different. The clothes are different. Where and when is he? The answer comes from an impossible source: Bishop Moroni Chadester. Hurtled back in time by forces he can't understand, Sam finds his memories of modern existence quickly fading as he becomes immersed in a new life and a romance with the town beauty, Laney Williams. But as the pair becomes entangled in a murder mystery, the thrill of courtship is replaced by terror as fate conspires to bring the couple into the path of a killer. Little do they realize that the clock is ticking on more than their lives Sam can't stay in the past forever. As danger looms ever closer, Sam must fight to save Laney. But can their love stand the test of time?

Sam Carroll is 25 years old, lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, and enjoys life in the fast lane. When he gets in a car accident and is in a coma, his brother reads to him from an old journal. Pretty soon Sam finds himself back in time learning life lessons that might change the course of his life.

I love this cover and the summary and was excited to read it! I was surprised to find myself putting it down and not anxious to pick it back up. It starts out with Sam's accident and we're told the kind of life he lived before. When he went back in time, he seemed to accept everything pretty easily and got the deep lessons right away. I wish we had seen more of what he was like before and that he would have struggled more to come to terms with what was happening. He received great advice (which I loved!) and took it to heart right away and that didn't seem realistic to me. But then, he traveled through time, right?

There's lots that I loved about this book, too! Sam had a supportive family who visited him and cared for him and let him know they loved him, despite his past behavior. The majority of the book happened in the past and I always enjoy reading about life prior to our modern-day conveniences and technology. There were lots of great townspeople and a murder mystery to solve. He witnessed firsthand how a community worked together to help those in need and the sacrifices they were willing to make to ease the burdens of others. Sam met a beautiful girl, Laney, who stole his heart and helped him become a better man. He also learned a lot from her brother, Joey. Sam became friends with John, who treated him like a brother and helped him through his initial awkward phase.

I wasn't quite sure how this was going to end and liked what happened. I wish there had been a little more but feel content in knowing the direction it was headed. This is LDS fiction so there is some religious talk and it's a huge part of the character's lives. There is also some mild non-graphic violence. It's a clean, sweet historical romance, with mystery and time travel all in one!

Her novel, In the Shadow of an Angel, grew from her great regard for the pioneers who put the statue of Moroni on the temple long ago, never realizing the changes that would come as the golden figure watched over their Zion for the next one hundred years. Nor could those early builders fully imagine the generations coming after them, for whom the statue would be a beacon and a guide, millions of people, each with a life to live and a story to tell, and all connected by the angel on the spire.

Trudy Genova is a medical consultant for a movie studio and is currently working on the set of a popular internet soap opera, Thornfield Place. Griff Kennedy has been coming on to her and she's been repulsed by him. He dies in the middle of a scene one day but points his finger at her before he dies. Detectives Ned O'Malley and Tony Borelli are put on the case. Trudy's best friend, Meg, is supposed to keep an eye on Detective Borelli but appears to be falling for him and Trudy fights her growing attraction to Detective O'Malley. There is a second death and Trudy's questions seem to make her the third target.

This book was fun to read! The Detectives wanted Trudy and Meg to stay out of their case but they just can't help themselves, especially Trudy. She lurks in the shadows, believing she goes unnoticed, and eavesdrops on multiple conversations. She's had some tough things happen in her life with her father and an ex-boyfriend. She wants answers when it comes to her dad and to pretend like her ex-boyfriend doesn't exist. She's endearing and funny and I enjoyed getting to know her. Meg is an amazing best friend and I love how supportive they are of each other. Her relationship with Ned got off to a rocky start and they had some misunderstandings along the way, which made for some funny moments. Their relationship will be fun to follow in future installments.

For the most part, it moved quickly, but there were a few spots that seemed slow to me. It's a good setup for the series. We meet the main characters and get to know a little bit about them. Some things are revealed that aren't wrapped up at the end so there's more story to be told. As far as content, there is some swearing and sexual situations, but no details. I look forward to reading more of this series!

Blog Tour/Review: The Kiss that Launched 1,000 Gifs by Sheralyn Pratt

The Kiss That Launched 1,000 Gifs, by Sheralyn Pratt

Each weekday from 2:00-4:00 p.m., Grace and Ashton cohost Battle of the Sexes, a radio program arguing the he-said/she-said issues of the day. Their fiery debates often have listeners wondering if there’s more to their relationship than just talk, even though Grace has been dating Phillip, Mr. Tall, Dark, and Perfect, since long before she ever met Ashton Miller.

Yet when news comes that Battle of the Sexes is on the bubble for cancellation, Grace and Ashton need to step up their efforts to engage their audience to keep the show alive. When a charity organization approaches them and proposes that the two of them kiss for a fund raiser, Grace and Ash agree to kiss for a good cause. A kiss is just a kiss, right?

Grace and Ashton are co-hosts of a radio program, "Battle of the Sexes," where they discuss and/or argue about issues that come up between men and women. Grace has been dating Phillip, a chef who owns his own restaurant, for the past three years but there is chemistry between Grace and Ashton that keeps their fans guessing at their real relationship. Things just get more heated when they are approached to share a public kiss for charity.

I heard a lot of hype about this book before I started reading it so I made sure to start it on a day when I could finish it. I'm glad I did, because it delivered! If I had to choose a side between the two, I would pick Ashton. He's fantastic! There really wasn't anything about him not to like--he's a genuinely good guy. I didn't connect with Grace right away but she grew on me by the end. They played well off each other and had some great banter and chemistry.

I loved Ashton's 15-year-old niece, Megan. Ashton is technologically challenged but desperately needs to catch up quickly and she's the right person for the job. Her life has had some challenges and he proves to her that he will always be there for her. They have each other's best interests at heart and step in when needed.

This is a quick, fun read and once I started it, there was no putting it down until I finished! It's a clean read, but there is some sexual innuendo and references to past relationships. This is the first book I've read by this author but it won't be the last!

Excerpt

“Good afternoon, and welcome to the newest edition of Battle of the Sexes," Grace said, starting off the show. "With me today is the man who has just proven that the Instagram app is truly foolproof—my no-longer-technically challenged cohost, Ashton Miller.”

Ash leaned forward into the mic. “And with me is the woman I’ve recently learned feels compelled to alert the world via photograph every time she finds a pair of shoes she likes—the woman who takes the ‘anonymous’ out of Shopaholics Anonymous—my lovely cohost, Grace Vasquez.”

Grace was unapologetic. “A good pair of shoes is worth sharing.”

“Oh? Does that mean I should post pictures of my shoes?” Ash asked, picking up his phone and pressing the camera icon.

“You’re wearing hiking boots.”

“That’s right,” Ash said, putting his shoes up on the table and snapping a picture. “These are Salomon Quest 4D GTXes. I wear them any time I go on a shoot that requires some hiking. They’re light, durable, and provide great stability. Is that the sort of thing you share on Instagram?”

“Not really,” Grace said. “But I’m sure Salomon doesn’t mind the free advertising you just handed them.”

“Well, I’m totally posting a picture,” Ash said, in his best valley girl tone. “It’s not every day a man finds comfort, function, and fashion all in one shoe.”

“Indeed,” Grace replied. “I’m still waiting for that day to happen for you.”

Ash smiled against his will and set his phone to the side. He’d post the photo later. Grace was clearly in a mood that required his full attention. “So what are we talking about today? And, please, don’t let it be shoes!”

Grace glanced at her computer screen, giving Ash a view of her stunning profile. Seriously, how was her skin so smooth?

“Today the most up-voted topic is…” She blinked, looking confused. “Huh.”

“Huh?” Ash echoed, intrigued by the look of confusion on Grace’s face.

“Cupcakes,” she said.

“Cupcakes?”

Grace nodded and frowned at her monitor. “Why do men hate cupcakes? is the trending topic at the moment.” Grace looked Ash’s way, visibly confused. “Do men hate cupcakes?”

Blog Tour/Review: Callahan Crossroads by Anola Pickett

Tour Schedule

Callahan Crossroads, by Anola Pickett
2015, 192p, Clean Historical Fiction

Source: Received a copy from the publisher for an honest review

Twelve-year-old George’s family won’t take him seriously. He’s ready to fight like a man on the front lines of the Great War, but instead he gets stuck on the home front, with nothing more exciting to do than look out for his younger sisters and elderly neighbor, Mrs. Schmitt.

But with no sign of victory in Europe, things are getting more and more tense at home, especially after George’s older brother makes a startling announcement.

Set in 1918 Kansas City, this old-fashioned family drama brings you to the heart of the World War I home front. Issue-drive and entertaining, it’s a coming-of-age story that will still resonate with readers today.

Kansas, 1918. George Callahan is 12 years old. He does lots of normal 12-year-old boy things, like hang out with friends, read to his sisters and help around the house. He also starts learning things he doesn't want to know and keeps secrets for his brother and his aunt. His neighbor, Mrs. Schmitt, is being targeted for her German name so he works to protect her as well.

George is a good boy that is trying to do his best and please those around him. He also wants to grow up and learns that being a kid might not be such a bad thing. His best friend, Jimmy, has a rough home life and will sometimes show up at his door with bruises. Jimmy's home life is chaotic and lots of changes happen to him during the course of the book.

I thought this novel did a great job of showing how "normal" life can be in the midst of war. While there's fighting going on, there are still chores to be done, friends to hang out with, babies being born and neighbors to help. Some are willing to fight for their country while others are opposed to war and looking to avoid enlisting. George was confused at times and had to figure out how he felt about some of the things that were going on around him.

This book deals with social issues, prejudice and attitudes about war. It's interesting to compare the way families and communities dealt with war in the early 1900's and how we deal with war today. It also deals with family and friendships and the impact those make on a young boy's life. This is a thought-provoking coming-of-age story that will also appeal to those interested in historical fiction. This is the first book I've read by this author and I'm looking forward to reading more of her work in the future!

The Turnaround Treasure Shop
by bestselling Australian romance author Jennie Jones!

Introduction and Exclusive Excerpt
By Author Jennie Jones

Looking for a delightful, warm story about family and second-chance love? The Turnaround Treasure Shop follows the adventures of the heart for Lily Johnson. Everyone has the right to at least one dream coming true, and Lily is determined to achieve her goal on her own. But things are tough on the financial front and if she doesn’t take the chance offered to her by ex-Navy Captain Nick Barton, she might find that “one day” never comes.

The Turnaround Treasure Shop is book #4 in the bestselling Swallow’s Fall series. But each book in the series can be read alone and frequently are – Jennie’s had plenty of readers buy book #3 and then go back for books #1 and #2.

Jennie’s fictional town of Swallow’s Fall is set in a remote country area in the Australian Snowy Mountains and boasts 100 residents. Lots of them falling in love, some of them longing for dreams to come true, some of them scheming or creating mayhem with their matchmaking plans – but all of them leaving a mark on this small country town.

Jennie has a great rapport with her readers all over the world and recently asked them if they’d read a new series: Daughters of Swallow’s Fall – and the resounding answer was – Yes! But before that, the next book in this series (#5) The House at the End of the Street is releasing on July 27th.

Read on for the excerpt...

“Good morning.” Lily Johnson didn’t look at Nicholas Barton, instead skimming her smile in the direction of the top of his head and off it again as fast as politely possible. Not that he noticed.

“Morning, Lily,” he said, dark head bowed to the breakfast plate she’d put on the table in front of him.

He wore a dark green crewneck with a white T-shirt beneath, the sleeves of his sweater pushed up his arms, the way they always were. How he got through the Snowy Mountains climate without a coat, Lily didn’t know. Even summers weren’t exactly drenched in heat in this part of Australia, and autumn always had a nip in the air. He was hardly ever out of dark green or bark-brown colours. A throw-back to his armed-forces days, probably. The strong silent type — but not mean or standoffish — just reserved. Which suggested a caring nature, Lily had always thought.

She moved to an empty table next to him and picked up a cruet set and a tomato sauce bottle, reminding herself to tell the young girl who’d worked Saturday night’s restaurant shift that she needed to make sure every table was set for the next day before leaving work.

“There.” She fussed with the salt and pepper, and straightened the napkin holder. “Enjoy,” she said, wiping her hands onto her white apron and hoping the salutation sounded the way it did when she said it to every customer she served breakfast.

“Thanks,” he said, in the same low-toned, unruffled manner he’d used to thank her for his weekend breakfasts for the last year.

He picked up his knife and fork. His forearms were thick and toughened with muscle. Those muscles wouldn’t stop at his elbows, they’d go right up his arms to support his heavy-duty shoulders. It was all that muscle which probably kept his body temperature warmed.

He looked up, his hooded leaf-green eyes holding an enquiry. “Everything all right?”

Lily stumbled over her laugh. “Sorry. Daydreaming.” Ouch. Daydreaming about Nick was taboo, and she didn’t want him knowing any of her taboo thoughts.

She turned for the kitchen of Kookaburra’s Hotel, and fanned her blazing face. Nicholas Barton made her tremble. He’d been making her tremble for 12 months and no matter how hard she tried to put the moment behind her, the recollection of the awkward position she’d put him in at last years’ Easter Bunny Ball fried her brain every time she saw him. Like a splash of hot oil on the scalp.

This year’s Ball was happening in two weeks’ time. Would he remember last year’s and stay clear? Or had he wiped the incident from his memory the way she wiped her hands on her apron? He was too much of a gentleman to have referred to it since, but sometimes Lily had the sense that behind his unflappable exterior, there was a zing of anticipation in the air between them. That was the bit that made Lily tremble.

Stick in the Mud Meets Spontaneity, by Rachael Anderson
2015, 208p, Clean Contemporary Romance

Home from college for the summer, Samantha Kinsey steps into her role as nanny for her two favorite little charges. But when she finds herself playing chauffeur more than playmate, her summer outlook quickly turns from fun to bleak. That is, until she drives the girls to a family-owned ranch and meets Colton McCoy—a genuine, hard-working cowboy, who’s as set in his ways as he is handsome. Although he claims he doesn’t need any fun in his life, Sam’s determined to help him find it. But she’ll soon discover that cowboys are about as easy to train as wild mustangs.

Stick in the Mud Meets Spontaneity is about an adaptable girl and a not so adaptable guy. It’s about learning to accept people for who they are and realizing that sometimes who they are is exactly who they should be.

This is the third book in the series and this one was just as fantastic as the other two! We met Sam in the first book and she was lovable from the beginning so I was excited to read her story!

Sam has been away at college and is back home for the summer before she heads to New York for her internship in the fall. She's worked hard and it's a dream come true for her. When she takes Kajsa to the ranch where she's working, she meets Colton. She's attracted to him right away and as they get to know each other, she becomes confused about what she really wants in life.

Sam and Colton's first meeting was hilarious! It involved family drama and her "Summer Bucket List," which he got his hands on. That list continued to come up throughout the book and made for some funny and interesting conversations and adventures. Sam and Colton are so different from each other but balance each other out nicely. Sam is adventurous but does have her limits. Colton is more steady but is willing to make adjustments when he needs to. There's a lot of humor but also some serious parts as well. It was fun to read about the characters from the other two books and get updates on them.

This is an entertaining book and an entertaining series and is definitely worth the read! I'm kind of sad to see it end but look forward to reading what Rachael Anderson comes up with next!
