1. With only a trusty steed and a pistol or two for companions, Express riding was not for the lonely or afraid. Riders would spend hours in the saddle, only encountering people at stops every twelve to twenty miles, and then for just a few brief minutes as the mail saddle was thrown onto the back of a fresh mount. A number of riders were also orphans with little or no family waiting for them back at their home base.

2. The weather out West can be a fickle mistress, changing with little warning. Express riders had to push through to deliver the mail whether they encountered sun, rain, hail, snow drifts, or even flash floods.

3. Not everyone appreciated the daring feat of the Express riders. Shortly after the creation of the Pony Express, Indians in Nevada and Utah began attacking Express stations, killing workers, and running off livestock. The troubles were soon resolved, but Express riders didn’t ride fast horses just to deliver the mail quickly—Express horses could supposedly outrun Indian ponies.

4. Express riders were expected to traverse whatever terrain their assigned route involved. Long stretches of prairie, mountainous regions, or barren deserts—the Express trail encompassed them all and its riders had to maneuver the varied landscape at top speed.

5. Besting oneself against the elements, enemies, and delays in order to deliver the mail must have been a weekly, and later a semi-weekly, adrenaline rush for Express riders. No wonder their stories have become larger than life. From a venture that only lasted a year and a half, legends were created that still endure today.
