The Jane Journals: Liam Darcy, I Loathe You!, by Heidi Jo Doxey
2015, 192p, YA Contemporary Fiction
My Rating=4.5 Stars

Lizzie, Nila, Alice, Cate, Vivian, and Fiona- six girls about to begin a writing assignment that changes everything. From cute crushes to dances and dresses, they're recording it all, and so is their teacher. This modern makeover of Jane Austen's beloved novels follows your favorite stories in a high school setting. Perfect for new fans and devoted Austenites alike!

This book was fun to read! Anne Elliott, the English teacher, has assigned her English class to keep a journal. We follow the stories of six girls as they share their highs and lows of high school life (Lizzie, Pride & Prejudice; Nila, Emma; Alice, Sense & Sensibility; Vivian, Sense & Sensibility; Cate, Northanger Abbey; and Fiona, Mansfield Park). And there is plenty of drama!! As a bonus, Anne Elliott (Persuasion) also keeps a journal so we learn more about her as well. Their stories are modern makeovers of Jane Austen novels.

Once I started reading this, it was hard to put down. I didn't have a favorite character or story, which surprised me because my favorite Jane Austen novels are Pride and Prejudice and Emma. I felt a little lost while reading the stories I'm less familiar with but I'm excited to read more about them as the series progresses.

Confession time: I haven't actually read all of Jane Austen's novels (gasp!) but I've seen the movies, some more than others. The author includes a character list in the back which helps to place the modern characters with their Jane Austen counterparts (a lot of the names are the same or quite similar). There are a lot of characters to keep track of so that is helpful.

This is a book that all levels of Jane Austen fans can enjoy. If you're new, it's a great introduction. If you're a fan but haven't read each one of her six major novels (like me), it will make you want to read them. If you're a hardcore fan, you will have a better feel for how true the author is staying to the original characters and you will know what's coming next! I enjoyed reading each of their stories and am excited for more!

I know I have said this before, and know it's kind of a no no in the book world, but I am not an Austen fan. This book sounds super cute though. Its hard for me to read books that are based off Austen, but it does sound like one I would enjoy! Great Review :)

Thanks, Katie!!

Paij, it's fine to not be an Austen fan. I admitted that I haven't personally read all of her books. I think you would like this one, though.
