Ian Quicksilver: The Warrior's Return, by Alyson Peterson

Nerdy foster kid Ian just found out it’s up to him to save the galaxy. But the only way he can do it is with help from the hottest girl in school, Arianna—who doesn’t remember that she and Ian are exiles from another planet—or that they’re betrothed. So . . . that’s awkward. Funny and full of twists, this is one sci-fi adventure you won’t want to miss!

Ian isn't anyone special. In fact, most people don't even realize he exists. He lives in a foster home and doesn't have any friends. Then, Coach Corbin becomes his new gym teacher and starts whipping him into shape. He has no idea why he's being singled out until Coach Corbin tells him who he really is and the quest he must complete to save his people--who live on another planet! Unfortunately, it requires the new, beautiful girl Arianna to fall in love with him and he doesn't have much time. There's also someone in a powerful position who is determined to see Ian fail, so, yeah, the deck is definitely stacked against him.

I breezed right through this book because it was so much fun to read! Ian is likable and funny and I laughed a lot at his relationship with Coach Corbin. The time to fulfill his quest kept getting shorter, too, so it seemed absolutely impossible. He's able to befriend Arianna fairly easily but she is determined to keep him in the friend zone. She has a secret that keeps her from getting close to many people but it's not an issue for Ian.

I loved Ian's voice and thought the author did a great job of writing as a teenage boy. It felt authentic and there were times that I forgot that she's female. There were plenty of twists and turns and I wasn't sure exactly how it would end. The ending is satisfying but there's definitely more story to be told. This is a fantastic first book and I'm excited to share it with my children! And, of course, I'm looking forward to reading more in the future!

About the author:

Alyson Peterson lives in a mountainside gully –of all places– in northern Utah with her neurotic, shed-tastic dog, two ninja kids, and superhero husband.  She spends her time painting, breaking bones at her Martial Arts class (mostly her own) and reading as many books as she can get her hands on.
