Joan Pryce is not only a Catholic during the English Reformation but also Welsh, and comes from a family of proud revolutionaries. But when a small act of defiance entangles her in a deadly conspiracy, a single misstep may lead her straight to the gallows. Now, Joan must navigate a twisting path that could cost her life, her freedom, and her chance of finding love.

This book was so interesting! It takes place during a time period that I'm not that familiar with so I feel like I learned a lot from reading it. Joan Pryce is a Welsh Catholic during a time when it's dangerous to be. After her father's death, her aunt takes over their home and she is sent to live with her godparents, Master and Mistress Lloyd. While there, she reunites with her childhood friend, Nicholas Bowen, who has changed a lot since she's last seen him. He's not happy to see her at all, which confuses her. She also meets the Lloyd's neighbor, Hugh Richards, who is handsome and happy to pay her attention.

Joan is given the opportunity to help free her people from religious oppression. It is dangerous and illegal but she knows she has to do whatever she can to help the cause. She showed great courage as she continued to do the right thing no matter how difficult it was or what it might personally cost her. There were a few people she knew she could absolutely trust and then there were others that she had to be careful around, to keep them safe and protect what she was doing.

I loved the way the story unfolded! There is a slow moving love story that takes time to develop. Joan forms relationships with several different characters and I enjoyed watching each of them develop. This book is well researched and well written, which made it such an interesting time period to read about. I absolutely love how it ended! This was so different from the author's first book, The Haunting of Springett Hall (which you can learn more about here). I'm excited to see what she comes up with next!

E.B. Wheeler grew up in Georgia and California. She earned her BA in history from BYU and has graduate degrees in history and landscape architecture from Utah State University. With Welsh ancestors on one side of her family and crypto-Catholics on the other, she’s been fascinated by the story of Welsh Catholics since writing about them in her master’s thesis. She’s the award-winning author of “The Haunting of Springett Hall” and lives in northern Utah with her family.

Book Tour Grand Finale for

The Bad Boy's Baby
By Cindi Madsen

We hope you enjoyed learning a little about Cam, Emma, and their daughter Zoey as they navigate family and the possibility of love. If you missed any of the stops, go back and check them out...

Launch - Interview with the Author

Q: What do you hope readers take with them after they’ve read The Bad Boy’s Baby?

A: I hope that they get a feel for Hope Springs and the fun characters who live there. I hope that they laugh and swoon as they watch Emma and Cam figure out how to do the co-parenting thing, and that they have a big smile on their face when they finish reading it.

LibriAmoriMiei - Review

"This novel is a real treat, a really sweet and romantic love story. The good girl, the bad guy and an adorable two year old baby, it's really hard not to love this romance. . . I highly recommend this one!"

The Written Adventure - Hope Spring’s Town Setting

Hope Springs is a tiny town in Wyoming where everyone knows everyone, one of the town committee members has CIA-type spy skills, despite her grandmotherly exterior, and events like picnic basket auctions are a yearly thing. There’s also a quilting group that has the beat on the happenings in town, whether it’s gossip or who’s in need of meals and extra support.

With Love for Books - Review

"There are plenty of heartwarming scenes and the ending is wonderful. If you're looking for a great small town love story, this is definitely a book you should read."

Booksomereads - Review

"The Bad Boy's Baby is a fun and easy contemporary romance read that is a perfect addition to anyone's spring or summer reading pile."

Katie's Clean Book Collection - Guest Post: 10 Things a New Dad Learns

1. Keeping toddlers away from mud and water is harder than it sounds.
2. You have to spell things involving favorite foods and movies to avoid the meltdowns mentioning them without having them ready brings on.

Colorimetry - Coming Home for Cam Brantley

Cam Brantley was known as the Hope Spring’s bad boy, right along with his brother, and his dad never had that great of a reputation, either. As soon as Cam turned eighteen he escaped town and his rough childhood to serve in the Army. His main motivation for coming home is to put hectic missions and bad memories behind him and run a mountain lodge with his brother.

Becky on Books - Review

"The playful back-and-forth between him and Emma (especially their trash talking competitions–building furniture, fishing–that they participated in) was a whole lot of fun to read. And watching Zoey whip him into shape as a dad? Priceless.

This book practically had me smiling from start to finish."

underneath the covers - 10 Things You Wouldn’t Know About a Bad Boy

He was always curious about the town’s golden girl who forever had her hand up in high school, all the answers on the tip of her tongue. . .

Harlie's Books - Review

"I loved their chemistry from the get go. Great dialogue, being friends and parents first and actually getting to know each other without the smexy times. Connecting on so many different levels besides Zoey, made for a great time watching them fall in love with each other."

Zerina Blossom's Books - Top Ten Favorite Romances

I love talking favorite romances. The hard part is narrowing it down. But here are my favorite romances, from books to movies to TV shows. . .

EskieMama Reads - Review

"This was a fun, heartwarming read if you are looking for a good weekend read with laughs, family & friends, a spunky senior citizen, an adorable 2 year old, second chance romance & a bad boy this book is for you. This was the first book I read by Cindi Madsen & it sure won't be the last. . ."

Getting Your Read On - Review

"This is a great story of second chance love. . . . I enjoyed this book and it's characters. It was easy to settle in and get carried away in the fantastic drama of Cam and Emma's lives."

deal sharing aunt - Interview

Q: What would you like my readers to know?

A: Well, I’d like to say hello-HI!-and that if you’re looking for a fun, flirty story that will hopefully make you laugh, those are the kind of books I love to write. Of course I think bookish people are some of the best people too. Finding people who can talk reading and books and getting lost in a story is always great.

Kindle and Me - Review

"I liked how realistic their issues were and how they resolved them together. I loved watching Cam turn into a family man and how he adored his daughter. I loved how Emma was grounded but also aware she had a daughter to provide for. . . . I liked the chemistry between Cam and Emma. I sighed at the end."

There are certain words that have always described Cam Brantley: Town bad boy. Soldier. Protector. But never, ever dad. Until he returns home from his latest military tour to discover the girl he had one smoking-hot night with is now mom to the adorable two-year-old Zoey. Who has his eyes.

Plenty of words could describe Emma Walker these days. Mom, dutiful granddaughter, budding designer, the town’s golden child. But when her longtime crush Cam Brantley comes back to town, she knows the perfect word to describe herself: screwed.

Cam and Emma are both shocked to discover he truly wants Zoey in his life. But Cam’s not sure he’s ready to be a dad, and Emma can’t gamble her daughter on maybes. As the long-simmering heat between Cam and Emma reaches a boiling point, he’ll have to work past his demons in order to be the man both girls need.

Daddy duty might be his toughest mission yet…

Blog Tour/Review: The Eagle Tree by Ned Hayes

About The Eagle Tree

• Paperback: 270 pages
• Publisher: Little A (July 5, 2016)

Fourteen-year-old March Wong knows everything there is to know about trees. They are his passion and his obsession, even after his recent falls—and despite the state’s threat to take him away from his mother if she can’t keep him from getting hurt. But the young autistic boy cannot resist the captivating pull of the Pacific Northwest’s lush forests just outside his back door.

One day, March is devastated to learn that the Eagle Tree—a monolithic Ponderosa Pine near his home in Olympia—is slated to be cut down by developers. Now, he will do anything in his power to save this beloved tree, including enlisting unlikely support from relatives, classmates, and even his bitter neighbor. In taking a stand, March will come face-to-face with some frightening possibilities: Even if he manages to save the Eagle Tree, is he risking himself and his mother to do it?

Intertwining themes of humanity and ecology, The Eagle Tree eloquently explores what it means part of a family, a society, and the natural world that surrounds and connects us.

This is a book  I was mixed about. The main character, March Wong, was someone I didn't relate to at all. He's a teenage, autistic boy who is obsessed with trees and is a firm believer in global warming but doesn't believe in God (he does attend church with his mother, though). I do, however, like to read books like this to give me a different perspective. I could only read in small doses because all the tree talk felt like I was reading a textbook at times.

What I did enjoy was March's interactions with others. He was smart but had a hard time communicating. His father  moved to Arizona for a job and March was resistant to moving there since there weren't any trees to climb. He and his mother moved to a new house which threw him off. He loved to climb trees and became obsessed with one particular tree and was willing to do whatever he could to save it. March was a character to cheer for. There were times he needed to get out of his comfort zone and he showed growth throughout the book.

Overall, this book was okay to me. I think I would have liked it more if we heard from some of the other characters, especially his mother and Uncle Mike. And I definitely could have done with less tree talk. The book started out slow but did pick up towards the end.

Praise

“Every human experience is unique, but The Eagle Tree provides insight into one distinctive and uniquely important perspective. The descriptions of climbing in The Eagle Tree get deep into the mathematical pattern-based sensory world of a person with autism. The experience of navigating a tree climb is described with mathematical and sensory detail that seems very authentic to me.” —Temple Grandin, PhD, author of Thinking in Pictures and Emergence: Labeled Autistic

The Eagle Tree is a gorgeously written novel that features one of the most accurate, finely drawn and memorable autistic protagonists in literature. The hero of the book is like a 14-year-old Walt Whitman with autism, seeking communion with the ancient magnificent beings that tower over the landscape around Olympia, Washington. Ned Hayes plays with the conventions of the unreliable narrator so that you end up feeling like March is a very reliable narrator of glorious and terrifying aspects of the world that neurotypicals can’t see. Credible, authentic, powerful. A must-read.” —Steve Silberman, author of NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity, winner of Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction

The Eagle Tree portrays a teenager who is believable and lovable. March, the main character, is a living, breathing person with significant challenges who is so realistic I feel I know him. I have not enjoyed an autistic novel as much since The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-TimeThe Eagle Tree’s beautifully written narrator is a real joy—March Wong is an unexpected leader who remains true to himself and prevails. This novel of family and forest will leave an indelible mark on your heart.” —Susan Senator, New York Times featured author of Making Peace with Autism and Autism Adulthood

“A wonderful read! To say that the narrator’s mind is unusual would not be correct. His mind is simply and marvelously unique like yours and mine. Or rather, like yours and mine could be if we lifted the eyes of our hope to the crowns of trees and listened to the voice of our neglected spirit. The Eagle Tree will remind you of the beauty and truth you may have forgotten.” —Francisco X. Stork, award-winning author of Marcelo in the Real World

He wrinkled his nose at her soggy lunchmeat. “You call that food? Let me see that.”

Marin hesitantly handed him her napkin-wrapped sandwich. He looked under the top piece of bread, made a face, and then dropped the entire thing in the garbage can.

“What! Why did you do that?” Marin cried out.

“I’m sorry, I just know that warm lunchmeat doesn’t make a nutritious dinner. But to make it up to you, I’ll buy you something else, ok?”

Marin stared at him openmouthed. Was he asking her out? Or just being really weird? She was speechless. He smiled and took her hand, dragging her through the main doors and out to his car.

“Do you like seafood?” he asked, helping her into his beat-up yellow Corolla. She nodded, still unsure if she had actually just been hijacked onto a date. “Great!” He pulled out his cell phone and made a call as he backed out the car.

“I’d like to make a take-out order. Yes. Hang on a sec, ok?” he leaned over to Marin, buckling her seatbelt and whispered, “Do you like shrimp?” She nodded. “OK, I’ll have the Ultimate Feast and can you throw in some extra garlic biscuits? Yeah, I know! Those things are totally addicting.” He threw his car into gear and headed toward the highway, still talking to the restaurant. “Um, yes.” He pulled the phone away from his mouth whispered to Marin, “What do you want to drink?”

“Water?” she threw out tentatively. Jaycen scowled at her and shook his head. “We’ll take two strawberry lemonades, please. Yes, that’s all. We’ll be there in about ten minutes. Thanks.” He hung up the phone and stuffed it in his pocket.

“Strawberry lemonade?” she said.

“Nothing but the best for my girl!” he smirked and laughed as she sputtered a protest.

“I happen to be allergic to strawberries!” she finally managed to say, enjoying the look on his face as the smirk disappeared.

“Oh, no! Are you really?”

“No. But it would serve you right if I were. Do you usually kidnap people, or is this a new hobby?”

“Only stubborn people who are impossible to talk to otherwise. So just you. But it is kind of fun. I may take it up as a sport.”

“Do you at least plan on telling me where you’re taking me?” she asked, trying to relax. His car smelled like Tommy Bahama cologne. It was slightly intoxicating.

“Sure. To my favorite place,” he said cryptically.

Blog Tour/Review: On the Edge by Stuart Edge

Tour Schedule

On the Edge: How My Crappy Job Changed My Life, by Stuart Edge
2016, 244p, Non-Fiction, Inspirational
My Rating=5 Stars
Source: Received a copy from the publisher for an honest review

“I think my video just went viral.”

Stuart Edge had a crappy run of things, including his parents’ divorce, anxiety, moving to Mexico and not speaking the language, and a job cleaning porta-potties. But instead of slowing him down, these struggles gave him the inspiration he needed to pursue his daydream—creating videos.

Now a YouTube sensation, Stuart shares his secrets to success and reveals his conversion from self-conscious to confident. For Stuart, being true to his beliefs has made all the difference.

Stuart Edge, a YouTube Sensation, shares how he turned a (literally) crappy job into a success story. This book is divided in three parts. In Part One, The Formative Years, he describes his life growing up. His parents divorced and his mother moved them to Mexico for a while. While there, he learned something that would ultimately help him years later. In Part Two, It All Starts to Come Together, he focuses on post-mission life, dating experiences and how his job cleaning porta-potties ultimately changed the course of his life. In Part Three, Viral Videos, he talks about what it was like to become an overnight sensation and the value in the lessons he continued to learn.

I actually hadn't heard of Stuart Edge before reading his book but the title grabbed my attention and I was interested in what he had to say. I loved that he was willing to open himself up and share what he learned through the tough times. I also loved his sense of humor! My son is interested in becoming a YouTuber and I liked that he included a few YouTube tips at the very end.

As I was reading about his videos, I realized that I had seen at least one of them before--the one where he was behind the camera. I checked out his YouTube Channel and like what he's doing so I subscribed to it. I will definitely be paying attention to him from now on! This book is full of great advice for teenagers, but adults will enjoy it, too!

About the author:

Stuart Edge was earning money for college tuition by cleaning portable toilets when inspiration hit: “Make YouTube Videos That Make People Happy.” Only months later, he called his mother in a panic. “Please pray for me. I think one of my videos just went viral.” The Mistletoe Kissing Prank did indeed go viral, netting more than 27 million views to date. Several viral videos later, Stuart Edge has found fame, and possibly fortune, making people laugh. Not bad for a boy with social anxiety.
