Book Review: Jackie by John Tammela

Find out how boys had fun in the 1930’s and 40’s…

Jackie was an average kid growing up in a Finnish household in Niagara Falls, Canada in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s. He had two older brothers, Eric, who picked on him, Armie, who was great at building forts and battle games and an older sister called Liisa, who was a bit too keen on “schooling” him.

In this true story, you can join Jackie on his adventures as he deals with the pains of growing up, from the terrors of the school nurse to the pangs of his first crush, with a good few snowball fights thrown in for good measure. Well, after all, it is Canada – the land of ice and snow!

Last year, I read Caddie Woodlawn with my children so I thought this would be similar to that and would be fun to read about a boy who grew up in Canada in the 1930's and '40's. I won't be recommending this like I do Caddie but parts of it were interesting. We enjoyed the story where he became king, when they played war games, and their various snow adventures. We learned about his relationships with his siblings and friends and how he overcame some of his fears. We also enjoyed the map sketches so we could see where he lived and where his adventures took him. At the end, I would have liked a little more explanation as to where the family wound up.

It was wordy at times and lots of details were given that didn't seem necessary. We had a super long chapter towards the end and didn't have much time so I skimmed over it and summarized it for my kids and my daughter later told me that was her favorite story since some of them were hard for her to follow, so they would have liked it better if the stories were more to the point.

I'm glad I didn't just hand this over to my children to read. There were a couple of disturbing parts. He was in the hospital when he was young and his nurse gave him a sponge bath. He described how he enjoyed it when she washed his private parts. Towards the end, there's a story where he's playing hide-and-seek and the granddaughter of his neighbor takes him to hide under the porch where she encourages him to feel her thigh. In a book like this, stories like that seem completely unnecessary to me. Because the first story was so early in the book, I did find myself reading it more cautiously in case there were other parts like that and that probably tainted my overall enjoyment of this book.

Release Day Celebration: Loop by Karen Akins

Loop
Loop #1
Author: Karen Akins
Release Date: October 21, 2014
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin

At a school where Quantum Paradox 101 is a required course and history field trips are literal, sixteen year-old time traveler Bree Bennis excels…at screwing up.

After Bree botches a solo midterm to the 21st century by accidentally taking a boy hostage (a teensy snafu), she stands to lose her scholarship. But when Bree sneaks back to talk the kid into keeping his yap shut, she doesn’t go back far enough. The boy, Finn, now three years older and hot as a solar flare, is convinced he’s in love with Bree, or rather, a future version of her that doesn’t think he’s a complete pain in the arse. To make matters worse, she inadvertently transports him back to the 23rd century with her.

Once home, Bree discovers that a recent rash of accidents at her school are anything but accidental. Someone is attacking time travelers. As Bree and her temporal tagalong uncover seemingly unconnected clues—a broken bracelet, a missing data file, the art heist of the millennium—that lead to the person responsible, she alone has the knowledge to piece the puzzle together. Knowledge only one other person has. Her future self.

But when those closest to her become the next victims, Bree realizes the attacker is willing to do anything to stop her. In the past, present, or future.

Blog Tour/Review: Stars, Stockings, and Shepherds by Shersta Chabot

Stars, Stockings & Shepherds, by Shersta Chabot, Illustrated by Corey Egbert
2014, 32p, Christmas Picture Book
My Rating=5 Stars
Source: Received a copy from the publisher for an honest review

Do you know the symbolism behind evergreens, sheep, or the color red? This adorably illustrated picture book teaches the meanings behind 24 Christmastime objects and is the perfect gift for any children, parents, or grandparents on your list. Make your family’s holiday season one to remember with this inspiring reminder of the gospel roots behind our treasured Christmas traditions.

I've learned about most of these symbols before and have had beautiful handouts with some of them over the years which I've either tossed or can't find. It's nice to have a beautifully illustrated book with the Christmas symbols and their meanings! No more hunting around for scraps of paper since I know this will be with the rest of my Christmas books.

The author takes 24 different objects, animals and people, from trees, lights, reindeer and sheep to Mary, Joseph and Jesus and explains how they relate to Christmas. I was familiar with some and learned about others for the first time. I didn't realize that holly is a symbol of good fortune, or luck. At one time, it was believed that if you hung branches of holly on your door and windows, it would invite good luck in and keep bad luck out and it also shows that the birth of Christ is celebrated in that home. I really need to make sure I have holly on hand during the holidays!

I love the layout of this book and the illustrations are amazing! This will make an excellent gift for anyone, young or old. I will be keeping this with my Christmas book collection and plan to read it every Christmas season with my children so we can keep the symbols and their meanings fresh in our minds!

Blog Tour/Review: Drone Games by Joel Narlock

Tour Schedule

Drone Games, by Joel Narlock
2014, 304p, Suspense

It’s domestic terrorism as you’ve never seen it before. An al-Qaeda cell uses cutting-edge drone technology to circumvent post-9/11 airport security measures. Within eight hours, two planes crash. The President faces an unthinkable decision: ground all planes—and the economy—or keep flying and risk more deaths. Based on real-life technology, Drone Games is a fascinating fictional account of terrorism’s future.

I enjoy reading these types of books. Drones are explained and the scenario given feels realistic. There was a lot of information given in the beginning of this novel which was interesting but it took me a while to get invested in the story. Once it took off, though, it was difficult for me to put this book down.

This is a book with terrorists, people from the NTSB, the DHS, a reporter and a professor from Georgia Tech who created the Entomopter drone to help with space exploration. We learn about each of them at first and then their lives start to intersect. It speeds up as the attacks start and there are multiple people working hard to figure out what is going on and stop it.

It was interesting to read what the terrorists were thinking and how they accomplished what they set out to do. I liked how it shifted back and forth so I felt like I knew what was happening with all of the characters. This book was hard for me to read at times, though, because I don't want to even imagine that some of these things could really happen. There are some good twists and turns as the story progresses and the ending sets up a sequel, which I hope is coming!

About the author:

Joel Narlock was born in La Crosse, WI and grew up hunting, fishing and raising a beautiful family. He’s experienced in corporate finance and small business management. He plays guitar and has performed in various local venues. He wrote his first novel about unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in 2003. Excerpt

The stench hung heavy in the air. There was no other smell in the world quite like it. First came the stink of grease fires from the wall torches, the heavy black smoke that roiled through the air like a foul fog. Then a moldering, musty base layer came to the senses. It reeked of decay and seeping moisture that grew black mold on every surface. The mold clung on the rough-cut rocks lining the dungeon tunnels. It covered the thick iron bars holding the prisoners in place. It even grew on the tattered rags covering the miserable creatures in the cells and likely on their skin as well. That final smell overlay the symphony of stink.

The Creach prisoners.

Werewolves, harpies, blind mad-worms, blinderwursts, fangpiercers, even some demons held with the special pure iron chains required to keep them in place. Many of these creatures were pungent under the best circumstances, but locked in the deepest dungeon underground, sometimes for decades, they took on an odor so ripe, so awful, that visitors to the dungeon often had to hold their breath to enter. Even then, the smell would make their eyes sting and well with tears.

Immediately after leaving the dungeon, visitors were allowed a bath or a shower in the castle. As they washed the stench from their bodies, they would feel an overwhelming sense of thanks that they were not a prisoner wallowing in the horrifying conditions they’d just witnessed.

No one, human or Creach, wanted to be a prisoner in the dungeons of Ren Lucre.

Far away, at the end of one of the long, twisting corridors, came the creak of a massive door opening. The prisoners stirred at the sound. Their reactions mirrored how long they had been in their cells.
The newer arrivals looked up with expectation, still hopeful their punishment was going to be short and that someone was coming to tell them their nightmare was over.

Those who had been there longer knew that hope was useless in this dark place. They simply cowered farther into whatever dark corner they could find in their cell, desperate not to be noticed by the Master.

Then there were those who had been there the longest. They simply looked up with mild interest, knowing that nothing they did made any difference. Their spirits were broken. Worse, they knew this to be the dark truth, and they simply didn’t care.

One single prisoner reacted in none of these ways. He simply stood, and the rags that had once been his clothes hung on his bony frame. Unbroken by years of starvation and torture, he still squared his shoulders in the direction of the sound and raised his chin, his eyes glistening in the torchlight with defiance. What he saw would have brought a normal man to his knees, but this man was no more normal than the monster approaching.

Ren Lucre, the five hundred year old vampire, filled the hallway as he strode through it, his cloak billowing behind him as he rushed past the stinking cells. His pale, narrow face looked pinched and concerned. His blood-red lip pursed in a straight line, and his eyes glowered like embers in a fire that might at any time combust into new flame.

He came to the thick set of bars that held the proud man, stopped, and stared him down.

“Well, if it isn’t the Lord of the Creach,” the man said. Even though his voice was course and weak, he still managed an edge of bitter sarcasm. “You look like you’re having a bad day.” The man spat on the floor. “Good.”

Blog Tour/Review: Sophia by Paula Kremser

Sophia, by Paula Kremser
2014, 208p, Clean Regency Romance
My Rating=4 Stars

Small-town Sophia Spencer can’t believe her luck when an unexpected inheritance allows her to experience London’s social scene. But her happiness disappears when she is caught napping in a grumpy gentleman’s room—and forced into an engagement to protect her reputation! Personalities collide and love blooms in this stunning debut novel.

First of all, I love the cover! Sophia heads to London when she receives an inheritance she definitely wasn't expecting. Her father is a country doctor and her mother has passed away. She's a small-town girl that doesn't understand the ways of London. Her aunt takes her under her wing and they attend a lot of social events. She gets tired at one of them and is shown a room in which to take a nap. It turns out to be a gentleman's bedroom (Alex) and when he comes in, they are caught in a compromising situation and need to get married or be ruined.

Sophia seemed for a while to just go along with everything. However, when it came to a whirlwind marriage, she put her foot down and decided to do it her way. She didn't care about being "ruined." Her fiance, Alex, wasn't happy with the situation, either, but he wanted to do the right thing. Sophia made a decision that Alex said he agreed with, but he was determined to have a different outcome. He had his own former issues with society and I was rooting for things to work out well for him this time. I enjoyed reading about them and got a good laugh at some of their conversations.

I liked that there was a mystery element to this story as well. As Sophia started putting the pieces together, she realized that not everyone had her best interests at heart. There were some great side characters as well who added to the drama and were fun to get to know. There were some twists in the story that kept me guessing and I enjoyed seeing how everything came together in the end. If you love Regency, this is a book you will want to read! This is the author's debut novel and I hope there will be more!
