Blog Tour: Choir of Angels by Michele Mirabile

Choir of Angels, by Michele Mirabile

He was so ready for this moment he could barely breathe. If he won, he knew he’d be the best Joseph the pageant had ever seen.

Riley loves Christmas, and this year, he wants something special: the chance to play Joseph in his school pageant. Sam, the neighborhood bully and a talented singer, wants the part too and is crushed when Riley lands the role. Riley doesn’t care—until he learns the secret Sam has been keeping from everyone. Now Riley has a choice to make, one that will change his view on Christmas forever.

Told from the perspective of a 12-year-old boy, this charming tale reminds us that being like Christ is the most important celebration of Christmas.

What a quick, sweet, fun read! It will literally take about 20 minutes to read. Riley is a nice boy who has a disability and his mother has always taught him not to let that stop him from achieving his goals. His goal this year is to be Joseph in the school pageant and he's worked really hard to get the part. He has a run in with Sam, the neighborhood bully, and his competition for the part of Joseph. Later that day, he has another run in with Sam and as he's telling his mom what happened, she lets him in on Sam's secret which means Riley has a big decision to make. This small book has a great message of sacrifice and forgiveness. This is a book I will definitely be sharing with my children this year and will include it in my Christmas stories to read every year!

Ebook Sale: Lancaster House and The Middle Aisle by Taylor Dean

Just in time for Halloween!!

 A PARANORMAL ROMANCE

Zoe Grayson needs a change. So, she moves to another state, purchases an old, dilapidated 1920s Victorian Mansion, and sets out to restore it to its former glory. As she begins the restoration, she finds herself falling in love with the old house . . . not to mention its illustrious builder, Mr. Lancaster. Zoe becomes obsessed with the house as she discovers its secrets; hidden rooms, secret passageways . . . and a mysterious man who seems to think the house is his. Who is he? More importantly, how does he live in her home unseen and unheard?

The unexpected answers leave her reeling—and questioning everything she’s ever known. To her dismay, Zoe’s actions land her in the local psychiatric hospital, scheming for ways to return to Lancaster House . . . and the love of her life.

The Sequel to Lancaster House

Zoe Grayson is back in Lancaster House, ordered to bed rest for the duration of her unexpected pregnancy. Doctor Wade Channing, her overzealous psychiatrist, is living in Lancaster House, taking care of her, waiting on her, and tending to her every need. It seems to be the perfect arrangement.

There’s just one catch.

She has to tell him her story—everything that has happened in her life since the moment she escaped from Serenity Hills. It’s been quite an adventure to include renovating another home and a walk down the middle aisle.

But, that’s all over now. Nothing is real. It never was.

How did she end up in this miserable situation?

Her heart fluttered when she heard the sound of the key turn in the lock. She quickly adjusted her maroon silk sari with the yellow border, the one that had caught his eye, and waited eagerly for his footsteps.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven... Yes, exactly seven steps before he stopped, hesitated for a few moments, then removed his shoes one by one and arranged them neatly side by side on the shoe rack.

She smiled. He had been mindful of taking his shoes off every day now. "I am not used to it, but I will if you want me to. It's probably a good thing to do anyway."

As he settled down, he would pick up the TV remote and, without looking at her, would say in his smooth baritone, "So how did you spend your day, anything interesting?"

Shaan Ahuja found himself bowing to tradition and agreeing to an arranged marriage to the beautiful Ruhi Sharma. He went through the motions but had no intention of carrying through on his vows. His last foray into matters of the heart with an American girl had left him scarred and unwilling to try again. Thoroughly disillusioned and disgruntled he wasted no time in making his intentions clear to Ruhi on their wedding night. But, he was completely unprepared for what his new wife had in mind.

I am a physician–and to many I may appear serious and solitary. But once people get to know me better, they often think that I am frank, down to earth, with quite a quirky sense of humor. And that is what I bring to my writing—read and you shall see.

I was born in the dead center of India, but had the privilege of spending time both in the north and south. Therefore I have been able to sample and absorb to some extent the vastly diverse cultures and languages of both these regions (the very quality that imparts tremendous richness to our country’s heritage,) —a phenomenon perhaps not seen anywhere else in the world.

After immigrating to the United States in my early twenties and spending several years in this country, whenever I travel back to my homeland now, I find that I appreciate my roots a lot more. Still there is so much to see and learn, that a lifetime won’t suffice.

Blog Tour: The Shadow of Atlantis by Wendy Leighton-Porter

About the Book

Title: The Shadow of Atlantis (Shadows From the Past, Book 1)
Author: Wendy Leighton-Porter
Year Published: 2012
Publisher: Mauve Square Publishing
Pages: 196
Recommended Age: 8+
Summary (Amazon):

Ten-year-old twins Joe and Jemima Lancelot have no idea why their parents have disappeared, but a mysterious old book which had belonged to their father holds the answer… and so begins an unusual quest to discover the truth.

Together with Max, their remarkable Tonkinese cat, and Charlie from next door, the children embark on an epic adventure, travelling back in time to the lost city of Atlantis. Once there, however, they soon run into problems.

Can they save the people of Atlantis from the disaster which is about to destroy their land forever?

And will they find their way back to the safety of their own time before it’s too late?
Joe and Jemima Lancelot's parents have disappeared without a trace and their uncle, Richard, takes them in, along with their cat, Max. Richard is single and a professor of archaeology at the University of London. He loves them but isn't used to having kids around so they're on their own a lot and they're all adjusting to their new situation. On the first day of summer vacation, their friend Charlie comes over, and they decide to go to the spare room on the top floor where their parents' things are stored to look for a book. It's one of their parents' most prized possessions and as they look at it, they can't figure out why. They become intrigued with it and see a strange word with a rhyme underneath it. They figure out what it means and find themselves in Atlantis. When they realize where they are, they decide they want to try to warn the people they meet about what's going to happen to them before Atlantis disappears. But not everyone is anxious to hear what they have to say.

I really enjoyed reading about Joe and Jemima. They're going through a difficult time and want to feel close to their parents which is when they discover the strange book. When they get to Atlantis (along with Charlie and Max, their cat), they meet Varna and Mykos and their parents. There's some confusion as they try to figure out why they are each taking turns at being able to speak and understand the Atlantean language. They figure that out and come across other challenges, like how to get grown-ups to believe what they're trying to warn them about.

The children learn more about their cat, Max, who is full of surprises. He plays a big part in their adventure and has quite the personality. I was hooked from the first page and this book held my attention because I wanted to know what would happen to all of them and how they would escape the tough situation they found themselves in. There was enough mystery and loose ends when I turned the final page to keep me wanting to read more.

This is a fun journey to an ancient time and place and it's only the beginning. There are currently six books available (there will be a total of 15) and they are each $.99 on Kindle (through Monday, October 28). This will be a fun series to read with my children and I highly recommend it!

"Shadows of Atlantis is a well-written story with a collection of likable main characters, a solid plot line, snippets of educational facts about a historically important location and event, and, is filled with mystery, magic, and suspense. This book grabbed me at the prologue and had me hooked until the end." ~ Mother Daughter Book Reviews, 5 Stars

"... Shadow of Atlantis is an imaginative tale that will draw children in right from the get go. The characters are deftly and warmly established, and Wendy shows a sure touch in enabling these characters to interact in a fun but believable fashion, each playing their own part in the plot's development...." ~ 5-Star review from John C., Amazon US

"The author makes the legend of Atlantis (and also the story of the Minotaur in the second book) so accessible to kids and in such an imaginative way. My daughter loved the children's characters and also the comical, lovable cat Max and his ability to help the characters out during times of strife! We will be looking out for future books from this author for sure. A really enjoyable adventure for kids and highly recommended..." ~ 5-Star review from A. Bradshaw, Amazon US

"This story will draw any young reader in will keep them entertained and engaged. It is sometimes hard to find books that will keep children interested, often their subject matter is trivial and insubstantial, this is not true of The Shadow of Atlantis. My daughter can't wait for the next adventure..." ~ 5-Star review from Annaliese M., Goodreads

Wendy Leighton-Porter, AuthorDividing my time between homes in England and South-West France, I live with my husband Simon and our two beautiful Tonkinese cats. I spent 20 years as a teacher of French, Latin and Classical studies, but now write books for children instead of teaching them.

The Shadow of Atlantis is the first book in a series of 15 planned time-travel stories, featuring 3 children and, unsurprisingly, a rather special Tonkinese cat. Having recently completed number #7, The Shadow of the Norman Arrow (coming soon!), I’m currently working on the eighth book in the series.

As I take my young readers on a magical mystery tour through the past, I’m also hoping that my love of history, myth and legend will rub off on them too. Personally, I’m enjoying the journey so much, I don’t ever want it to end! Why not come along with me for the ride?

Book Blast: Starchild: The City of Souls by Vacen Taylor

Starchild: The City of Souls

In The Age of Akra, a pilgrimage to the Valley of a Thousand Thoughts brings together four children as an ancient prophecy is set in motion. Having triumphed against dangerous adversaries, Mai, Long, Akra and Sahib are now pursued by the melkarie and must escape to the City of Souls. In the land of Naroan, in a city hidden under a blanket of living green, they are confronted with the challenge to find the Singing Soul.

But the underworld has other plans, and a beast so fierce is conjured to stop the children from finding anything that will add to the power to the prophecy of the seven nations.
Praise for Starchild:
“Strong and riveting start to what is sure to be an engrossing series for young readers keen on fantasy, mythology and sci fi.”

“Following in the footsteps of shamanic storytellers, the wizardess Vacen Taylor has delivered a winner! Mystical and magical, it’s a thoroughly engaging adventure that will delight both children and adults.”

*** Starchild: The Age of Akra (Book One) is only $0.99 in the Kindle Store for October ***

Excerpt:
The children were unaware of the dark forces that had gathered in the south. A force far greater than any seen before had grown into a power of unconquerable strength. From the very first night of Mai and Long’s journey, the eyes from which this force had grown had been searching for them. The search would not stop until the prophecy, its foreknowledge and the children were extinguished.

The four children had travelled a long way. The mountain had disappeared behind them and so had the crumbled Castle of Stone. Akra had been attentive throughout the whole journey, listening to Sahib talk about the City of Beams. Behind them Long listened in, but Mai sensed a twinge of jealousy was beginning to twist his thoughts. Sahib and Akra were friends now. Long’s ‘buddy for life’ had been yanked away from him—by a sealer of all things. Mai noticed the frown on Long’s face, pushing his eyebrows closer together as he watched Sahib and Akra talk. Every so often he stopped to rub his ankles. Mai knew the burns around them would not heal quickly. The wound left from the searing grasp of the invisible hands of the underworld, which had almost pulled him to his death, would soon blister. What she didn’t know was that two nasty red streaks were beginning to snake their way up Long’s legs, and with them came an unusual meddling in his thoughts.

When it was clear to Mai they had walked as far as possible for that day they found a place to rest. Long collected some dead wood, and with Akra’s fireruling skills a crackling fire soon spread its warmth as the darkness of the night settled over them. It was a clear night. A starlit blanket twinkled above them. Each of the children, too tired to eat, curled up around the fire and soon they were all asleep. Mai was happy to be back on her journey to the Valley of a Thousand Thoughts. But as she slept her flickering eyelids told a different story. Her mind replayed memories of the last few days that had passed. It was a skill only thoughtbankers possessed: the ability to replay a memory as if it were a dream.

Blog Tour: Peace, Be Still by David S. Baxter

Peace, Be Still, by David S. Baxter
2013, 128p, LDS Non-Fiction
My Rating=5 stars
Source: Received copy from publisher for an honest review

“No waters can swallow the ship where lies
The Master of ocean and earth and skies.
They all shall sweetly obey thy will:
Peace, be still; peace, be still.”
(Hymns, “Master, the Tempest is Raging,” no. 105.)

Our modern world is full of fast-paced stress and jam-packed schedules. Both trials and blessings happen to us so quickly that there is rarely a moment of peace. It is easy to be overwhelmed and lost.

In Peace, Be Still, Elder David S. Baxter of the Seventy describes ways for us to find peace in our crazy world by turning to our Lord, Jesus Christ. He speaks of principles to learn, habits to gain, and places to go to find peace in our daily lives and at home. This inspiring book will help us through the tempests in our lives and lead us to a greater sense of personal peace by encouraging and instructing us to follow Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace.

I loved this book! I found myself thinking each chapter was the best one and the one I needed the most, and then I moved on to the next one and thought the same thing. I have lots of highlights to go back and reflect on. Elder Baxter uses lots of quotes from church leaders, past and present.

The chapters are as follows: 1) The Still, Small Voice; 2) Peace in the World; 3) Peace through Forgiveness; 4) Peace amidst Adversity; 5) Peace amidst Death; 6) Peaceful Places; 7) Peaceful Pathways; 8) Peaceful Perspectives; 9) Peace at Home; and 10) The Prince of Peace.

One of my favorite parts is in the Peaceful Pathways chapter, where he says, "Somehow and in some way, in the midst of this avaricious attack on our sense of calm and peace, we each have to simply find the time, and a place of solitude to reflect, ponder, and 'be still'." Life gets so busy and I often find myself craving stillness so that I can reflect on my purpose and the direction I need to take in life. This is a good concept to embrace and I find when I do it, I feel peace and inspiration.

I also enjoyed something he said in the Peaceful Perspectives chapter on happiness. "I am convinced that we can each find things to be happy about, even if our current circumstances are less than enviable. We are each writing our own book, and we should not allow some unhappy passages to bring dismay to the chapters yet to be written. As long as we are breathing, the book is still a work in progress. Find happy things, make them happier, enjoy them, and write them down. Your own record of happy experiences can be read over and over again; they will bring you peace." The end of last year was rough for me and I felt like it had been the worst year ever. I knew good things had happened, but I just couldn't remember any of them. I saw an idea on Facebook (it probably originally came from Pinterest) for a "Good News Jar." When something good happens, you write it down on a piece of paper and put it in the jar. Then, at the end of the year, you read what's in it to remember all the good times throughout the year. We've implemented this in our family this year. We need to catch up on a few activities, but we plan to read it during Christmas break to remind ourselves of all the fun times we've had this year. I'm excited for it and plan to make it a tradition in our family so we can always remember the good times, no matter what else is happening!

With so much turmoil in the world, this book has a lot of great suggestions and quotes to feel peace in all areas of life. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to find peace and happiness!
