2014 Swoony Awards: Excellence in Clean Fiction

My friends over at the Happily Ever After Book Club have announced a new project they're working on. Kathy at Bookworm Nation, had an amazing idea and she, along with Kathy Jo at KJ's Book Nook, and Katie at Katie's Clean Book Collection have teamed up to put together the Swoony Awards! Kathy found Tiana at The Blog Decorator and she did an amazing job at designing the logo!

This is my friend, Katie's, description of the awards:

What are the Swoony Awards? Well, let me tell you. We are all lovers of good, clean fiction, especially books that make us swoon, hence the name. As we've been talking, we decided that there needs to be an award out there that recognizes all of the authors who really make an effort to bring a fun and entertaining story to readers without all the sex, language, gore, etc--a book that you can recommend to your mom...or grandma...or friend...without being embarrassed by it. We are going to have awards in a variety of categories, so please be sure to vote!

Here are the requirements to nominate a book:
  • Only books published (or republished) in 2014 may be nominated
  • Clean--no sex (closed door)
  • Mild/no language
  • Mild/no violence
So...come and check out the books on the list by going here. If you know of a great book that isn't already on the list, please feel free to add it. You are able to vote for up to 100 books! Please vote for as many as you've read and loved. Voting ends at the end of 2014 and winners will be announced in January 2015.

Book Review: Invective by Andy Owen

Invective, by Andy Owen
2014, 156p, Fiction
My Rating=5 Stars
Source: Received a copy from the author for an honest review

Following the narrative arc of Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, Ismael narrates the story of how he has come to end up lying, injured, in a compound on the Afghanistan border after a drone strike, life draining away. The story unfolds towards the present, as he thinks back across his journey from a suburb of Birmingham, where he was brought up, to pray circles in the city run by a charismatic individual who leads the small group Ismael joins, to Dubai, on to Karachi, and then to the mountains, to meet the fabled White Sheik. This journey begins with the discovery that he was adopted, after his real father killed himself in a suicide bombing. Ismael decides to test himself to see whether, if subjected to the same environment, his nature will push him to similar violent conclusions. Along the way he is asked to work for the security services, informing on the man who had radicalised his real father. As the story progresses he is torn between loyalty to those he is travelling with, those he has come to work with at the security services, and to himself. After witnessing the violence created by both sides, as he moves through this new world, back in the present, he is forced to decide what acts are acceptable and work out what he is prepared to do to get himself home.

The story explores what makes some of us need to seek out adventure and conflict, and makes many of us need to believe in a cause. Ismael attempts to understand why so much of the violence he has seen is caused by our inability to accept what it means to be human and the reality of all our fates.

When I read the summary for this book, I knew it was one I wanted to read. I've often wondered why certain people feel compelled to commit what I feel are senseless acts. This story takes a young man, Ismael, who learns that he was adopted and his birth father was a suicide bomber. He wonders what prompted his father to do that and sets out to learn if he has those same tendencies himself.

Ismael wants to share this experience with someone and meets up with Gary and Alex (I'm not remembering exactly how they met). He's not sure which intelligence agency they're with, but he gives them information from the inside. It was interesting to see how he worked both sides and found it hard to be completely loyal to either one.

I was drawn into this story and it felt like I was reading an autobiography. It was interesting to read Ismael's experiences and find that when the human element is introduced, things aren't as black and white as they are in theory. I'm glad I went on this journey with him since I learned a few things along the way. I did a lot of highlighting. This is one of those books that is best to experience for yourself. It's a thought provoking story which I enjoyed from beginning to end!

Blog Tour/Spotlight: My Name is Bryan by Stacy Lynn Carroll

Tour Schedule

My Name is Bryan by Stacy Lynn Carroll

If your friends jumped off a cliff, would you jump too? Bryan chose to dive. Moments later, as he lay on the beach, unable to move his arms or legs, two questions ran through his mind: Would he walk again? And would he ever have kids? Based on the incredible true story of life, love, and never giving up.

Praise for the book:

“I plowed through his story, amazed at how he could so easily accept something that would destroy anyone else and just move forward with such a positive attitude. I don’t give many 5 stars, but it’s well-earned. This book really touched me. It’s the kind of story that stays with you for a long time.”
–Amazon customer

“I actually love stories like this. Ones that show the power of the human spirit and what love and determination can achieve. I cried multiple times while reading this but they were a happy sort of hopeful tears. If you are looking for something uplifting and motivational read this heart-felt story of love and hope.”
–Inspired Kathy ;)

“You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll wring your hands in frustration, and you won’t be able to put it down to go to sleep as you keep waiting to read about Bryan’s happily ever after. This is one of those books that stick with you long after you’ve finished reading it.”
–Bookmom

“Each chapter begins with an inspirational quote to lead the reader into the goodness, hardship, unconditional love, and humor that is Bryan’s life. The 30 year journey the reader takes runs smoothly page after page. You will cry and you will laugh. You will want to hug Nedra and Bryan when you are finished.”
–Kriss A.

Excerpt:

He began hiking in the direction the other guys had gone. He hiked nearly a mile and was about to turn back when he saw them jumping off a ledge that overlooked the water. The crimson cliff stood before him like a towering giant, with arms stretched up toward heaven. A smile spread across his face and he lunged at the overhang; David was ready to take on the mighty Goliath. Bryan could hear laughter growing closer as he climbed higher and higher. His long legs made the ascent easy, and as he grabbed the last dusty ledge, he heaved himself up and over the top. Spending the last couple months working hard outdoors had seriously increased Bryan’s muscle mass, so he was able to climb up to the rocky ledge with relative ease. As he watched the other jumpers, some hit the water with pencil-straight legs while others bent their knees, looking as though they were sitting mid-air. A couple of the guys started doing flips off the cliff edge into the water. It seems inevitable that when a large group of guys get together, they try to outdo one another. Bryan watched another buddy flip off the ledge and land feet first in the water below, and then jump up out of the ripples and shake the water from his hair, laughing as he made his way back to the shore to try it again.

Bryan didn’t want to do a flip. That just seemed stupid. It’s harder to control the way you land, and he was nervous about clearing enough space to keep his head from hitting rocks. He couldn’t really just jump either. After the flippers, that would make him look like a pansy. Bryan spent the majority of his life living near a pool, and he spent a large number of weekends on a lake with his family’s boat. He was a seasoned swimmer. He had no doubt in his mind that he could show up these boys.

Bryan stepped closer to the edge and looked down, waiting for the others to clear out of his way. With perfectly straight arms raised above his head, he bent his knees slightly for momentum and jumped. A huge smile spread across his face as he sailed through the air, the wind caressing his cheeks as the water neared. Bryan knew he had done a perfect swan dive. He only wished he could have seen how beautiful it must have been to the onlookers. His fingertips touched the cool liquid first, his body forming a flawless straight line behind them. But something was wrong. He was sailing through the water, and the river floor was coming too fast. His hands hit the sand hard. His elbows buckled. Bryan’s head smashed into the bottom and with a loud POP, he knew his life would be changed forever.

Blog Tour/Review: Resisting Ruby Rose by Jessie Humphries

Resisting Ruby Rose, by Jessie Humphries
2014, 284p, YA Suspense
My Rating=4.5 Stars
Source: Received a copy for an honest review

Still reeling from the heartbreaking events that unfolded on Grissom Island, Ruby Rose is trying to come to terms with the fact that she’s gone from a vigilante in killer shoes to a stone-cold killer. Everyone from her therapist to her smoking-hot boyfriend keeps trying to convince her that she hasn’t crossed over to the dark side, but Ruby isn’t so sure. It doesn’t help that her nemesis, Detective “Mastermind” Martinez, is still out there, waiting for another chance to take her down.

When an alleged CIA agent named Skryker shows up and asks for a meeting, Ruby figures it just means more questions about her case. But he has information of an entirely different nature and a job offer: join an elite force of young assassins, including Skryker’s right-hand guy, Quinn Donovan. Quinn is distractingly charming, handsome—and deadly. Ruby resists becoming a killer again, but as she becomes more ensnared in a web of deceit, no one around her is safe.

I reviewed the first book in this series and you can find my thoughts on it here. I was mixed on the first book and liked this one better. Ruby's life is still pretty crazy and she still doesn't have the greatest adult role models but I liked that in this book, she was around other people more so we got to see more of her interactions. Something happens with her mom that makes me hopeful that their relationship can be salvaged in the future.

There is a new love interest introduced (Quinn) and Ruby is attracted to him right away. She's not sure if she can trust him, though. I personally liked Quinn better than Liam and wasn't sure which one she would end up with in the end. Like book one, this one moves quickly and there are twists and turns that kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. Ruby learns some things about herself by the end and has resolution to a major issue for her. It will be interesting to see if there's another book in this series. The ending was satisfactory and I felt like there were a few remaining questions but nothing burning. If there is more, I would be interested to see the direction Ruby takes next!

There is different content in this one than the last one so I would recommend this series to more mature YA readers. There is quite a bit of sexual tension and kissing, some of which is pretty intense.

Or plug into a USB car adapter/charger, or a computer USB port, or a USB adapter/charger for cell phones, etc.

A senator’s son with political aspirations of his own, Kyle’s wealthy, handsome, and in need of a wife. Will Charlotte be disappointed yet again, or will she finally be able to make a husband for herself?

About the Author & Illustrator: Subhash & Sujata Kommuru

Subhash and Sujata Kommuru
Subhash and Sujata Kommuru hail from India. They migrated to the United States along with their memories of childhood and youth. Now that they are parents, just like every immigrant they crave to introduce their child to the culture and values of their upbringing. Yet it is challenging to teach something while you are in the midst of adjusting to a different culture yourself.

Subhash and Sujata both work in different disciplines and have different styles and backgrounds, but it is the upbringing of their son that brings them on the same page. That exact place where they meet is captured and reflected in their stories, where Subhash can express in words, and Sujata can illustrate them beautifully. Where he puts it in black and white, she adds color to it. You get the idea!

These stories are their attempt to share a glimpse of their childhood days with their son. He is their inspiration to write short stories that have meaning to them and provide teaching in some shape or form.
