The Buzz About the Book

"Young Knights of the Round Table is a short, fast-paced adventure set in Arthurian times which features great character development, an intriguing and engaging plot, and a surprise ending (in more ways than one!). I would highly recommend this book to tween and teen boys and girls who love mysteries or stories set in the time of King Arthur." ~ Renee @ Mother Daughter Book Reviews

"I so enjoyed the factual information about weapons, clothing, daily life, and places, cleverly interspersed in the text and dialogue to inform without overwhelming young readers. The author has a gift for delving into the depths of each young hero’s psyche. The way each one of the trio faces their fears, learns to believe in themselves, and finds their true meaning and path in life is moving. This is a superb coming-of-age story, set in a time of chivalry and pageantry, and harking back to an age when a hero was truly a hero. Five stars! " ~ Fiona Ingram, Author

"There is much to rave about this book, and I don’t want to give anything away because it’s a quick paced, thrilling, new classic about the knights. Witches, white stags, and a Wild Man make the plot exciting, along with cheering along the young knights. There are quite a few surprises at the end that really make the book a great read. We highly recommend this book for any young reader; sure, boys might convinced by the action and title, but I’m positive all young readers will enjoy the mystery and chivalry of Young Knights of the Round Table: The King’s Ransom! " ~ Tales of a Bookworm

"I absolutely loved this book... [T]his book has just enough Arthurian legend to tie it to and draw from that period of history while being jam-packed with fantastic new characters and fresh plot twists. I am rarely surprised by things in books, but this book really surprised me with a few events I totally did not see coming! I highly recommend this book for young readers! It would be an excellent tie-in to a unit study about King Arthur." ~ Mommynificent

"This is a fast-paced story that children and adults will both enjoy! It's well-written and exciting as we read about the fears each boy faces and how they are able to triumph. It's a great story about loyalty, friendship and overcoming obstacles. Because of the length, it doesn't drag or slow down at all, so it's fun to read and hard to put down. And the ending is full of surprises! I highly recommend reading this book! " ~ Mel's Shelves

Blog Tour/Review: Sense and Sensibility by Rebecca H. Jamison

Tour Schedule

Sense & Sensibility: A Latter-day Tale, by Rebecca H. Jamison
2014, 256p, Contemporary Clean Romance
My Rating=5 Stars
Source: Received a copy from the publisher for an honest review

Which is the key to love—passion or sensibility? Sensible Elly and romantic Maren are sisters trying to hold their family together in the wake of their father’s bankruptcy and death. As both unexpectedly encounter the madness and misadventures of love, they find out what true happiness means. This modern reimagining of the Jane Austen favorite will capture your heart all over again.

Confession time: I've never read the original Sense & Sensibility by Jane Austen. So, I can't compare this story to the original. What I can say is that it was awesome and I enjoyed reading it!

The story goes back and forth between Elly and Maren. They are two sisters whose father has died and he left them with a lot of debt. Their mother is doing what she can to help and they also have a younger, autistic sister Grace. They take turns helping out with Grace and she's a great addition to the story.

Elly gets out there and tries to do something to improve their situation and save their home while Maren stays in bed because she's depressed. Elly meets Ethan who encourages her to come work for his company. She's very familiar with it since it's run by her ex-fiance, Jake, who is now married to Ethan's sister, Candi. Elly did something in the past to Candi that she's not proud of. There are some funny moments that happen due to this whole situation.

Maren has a hard time coping with all that's happened to their family. When the family moves across the country to live with their grandmother, she's introduced to someone that would be good for her but falls for someone who makes her feel alive. He seems perfect for her but then starts doing some strange things that don't make sense. I understood his appeal at first but there were times I wanted to smack him.

I loved reading the perspectives of each sister. They are very different from each other and each have their own challenges and trials to work through. Parts of this book were quite frustrating as Ethan seemed to like Elly but something was holding him back. I liked their relationship and wanted them to figure out a way to make it work. There were some twists and turns and I wasn't sure how it would end for either sister. The ending is satisfying and I highly recommend it if you're looking for a good, clean read!

I did read Persuasion:A Latter-day Tale a few years ago, which was also written by this author and I enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to reading Emma: A Latter-day Tale and will look for more books by Ms. Jamison in the future!

Rebecca H. Jamison has lived on a live volcano, excavated the bones of a prehistoric mammal, and won first prize at a rigged chili cook-off. She wrote novels just for fun until she made a New Year’s resolution in 2011 to submit a manuscript to publishers. Her first two published works are Persuasion: A Latter-day Tale and Emma: A Latter-day Tale. Rebecca grew up in Virginia. She attended Brigham Young University, where she earned a BA and MA in English. In between college and graduate school, she served a mission to Portugal and the Cape Verde islands. Her job titles have included special education teacher’s aide, technical writer, English teacher, and stay-at-home mom. Rebecca enjoys running, dancing, reading, and watching detective shows. She lives with her husband and children in Utah.

Blog Tour/Review: Son of War, Daughter of Chaos, by Janette Rallison

Tour Schedule

Son of War, Daughter of Chaos

Aislynn is accustomed to watching for the enemy. Her parents instructed her from the time she was young to look for the signs: people with greater than normal strength, eyes that can glow green, and have the ability to jump long distances. Over the years, Aislynn has come to view her parents’ fears as quirks—things that get in the way of having a normal high school life.

When Aislynn’s mother dies under suspicious conditions, her father doubles his restrictions. But all his precautions can’t stop the boy with glowing green eyes from finding Aislynn. She realizes too late she’s been drafted into an ancient Egyptian war, whether she’s prepared or not.

I love Janette Rallison's books so had high expectations going in and once again, she didn't disappoint! Aislynn thinks her father goes overboard when he secures their home like a fortress every time they move and keeps warning her about people with flashing green eyes and other physical abnormalities. She looked diligently for people matching that description when she was young, but she's tired of it. As far as she's concerned, she's a typical teenager trying to fit in and catch the attention of Dane, the boy she's had a crush on for a while. He finally appears to like her back and they share an amazing kiss in the rain but shortly after that something happens that changes everything.

Aislynn tries to figure out what's going on and the real story of the night her mother died. Did it really happen as she'd always been told? She also learns the history between the Horusians and the Setites and where she fits in with them. There's so much more to tell but I won't so you can experience this for yourself!

I love how quickly the storyline moved and it never felt slow to me. I couldn't figure out who the good guys and bad guys were. There's some romance (and great kissing scenes!) and I was rooting for a relationship that seemed unlikely to work. There's also lots of traveling, an ancient war, mythological and paranormal elements and twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end. The ending is satisfying but there's still more story that can be told. I'm really hoping for a second book!!

My Rating=5+ Stars

*I received a copy from the tour host for review. My opinion is 100% my own.*

Author Janette Rallison

Janette Rallison is old. Don’t ask how old, because it isn’t polite. Let’s just say she’s older than she’d like to be and leave it at that.
Janette lives in Chandler, Arizona with her husband, five children and enough cats to classify her as “an eccentric cat lady.” She did not do this on purpose. (The cats, that is; she had the children on purpose.) Every single one of the felines showed up on its own and refuses to leave. Not even the family’s fearless little Westie dog can drive them off.

Since Janette has five children and deadlines to write books, she doesn’t have much time left over for hobbies. But since this is the internet and you can’t actually check up to see if anything on this site is true, let’s just say she enjoys dancing, scuba diving, horse back riding and long talks with Orlando Bloom. (Well, I never said he answers back.)

Book Review: Ashlynn's Dreams by Julie C. Gilbert

Ashlynn's Dreams, by Julie C. Gilbert
2013, 218p, YA Science Fiction
My Rating=4 Stars
Source: Received a copy from the author for an honest review

Before she was kidnapped, Jillian Marie Antel Blairington was just an average bright, brave, headstrong child. She was excited for life in a new house with her Momma and new Daddy. Afterward, she's all that ... and so much more.

Held in a scientific facility, Jillian discovers her past-a family she never knew and a power she doesn't understand. With her ability now activated, she can enter and even shape a person's dreams. Jillian's been kidnapped, and her Gift has been triggered, so she can locate and save Benjamin Connelly, a brother she never even knew she had. She'd better master this strange ability quickly, though, because her life isn't the only one at stake. Her babysitter, Danielle Matheson, is being held as a hostage to ensure Jillian's full cooperation. Slowly, Jillian begins to learn more about her captor and the other genetically altered children held at the facility.

Join Jillian as she tries to survive the training being forced upon her, find her unknown brother, escape with Danielle, and work her way back to a normal life once more.

This book is very different from what I've been reading lately and I really liked that! Jillian is 12 years old and she and her babysitter, Danielle, were kidnapped. It's written through letters written by Danielle and journal entries written by Jillian. Jillian first reveals that she has two mommas and four daddies and yes, that sentence alone was intriguing enough to me to keep reading.

Jillian has no idea at first why she's been kidnapped. She learns more about her surprising past and the people who become a big part of her life. Some of them are likable and others definitely aren't (like Daddy Three). She learns about her gift to shape people's dreams and needs to learn how to use it quickly to save Benjamin, a brother she wasn't aware of. Danielle is being held hostage to keep Jillian in line and she quickly learns that the man in charge isn't afraid of inflicting pain on Danielle. Jillian works to find Benjamin so she can return home, but of course it's not that easy.

I felt that this storyline wrapped up nicely, but there are still lots of questions and there's definitely more to learn. I like the style the book was written in (letters and journal entries) and was interested to find out who Ashlynn was. The ending led me to believe there was more, and there is! The second book is Nadia's Tears, and I'm looking forward to reading it!

The Cinderella Theorem (The Lily Sparrow Chronicles)The Cinderella Theorem
(The Lily Sparrow Chronicles #1)
by Kristee Ravan

YA Urban Fantasy

Paperback, 367 pages

March 17th 2014

Fairy tales are naturally non-mathematical. That is a fact, and fifteen-year-old Lily Sparrow loves factual, mathematical logic. So when her mother confesses that Lily’s deceased father is (a) not dead, (b) coming to dinner, and (c) the ruler of a fairy tale kingdom accessible through the upstairs bathtub, Lily clings to her math to help her make sense of this new double life (1 life in the real world + 1 secret life in the fairy tale world = a double life).

Even though it’s not mathematical, Lily finds herself being pulled into a mystery involving an unhappy Cinderella, a greasy sycophant called Levi, and a slew of vanishing fairy tale characters. Racing against the clock, with a sound mathematical plan, Lily attempts to save her fairy tale friends while proving that normality = happiness.

Excerpt

Mom smiled at me. “How was school?”
“Not enough math.” I munched a pretzel. “What time are we
going out tonight?”
“Going out?” Mom’s voice was quieter, distracted. She was
sinking back into her novel.
     “For dinner? For my birthday?”
Eyes fixed on her computer screen, she answered, “No. Matt
is bringing dinner.”
“Matt? Matt who?” I quickly ran a mental index of my
mother’s friends, acquaintances, and contacts for a Matt.
Mom gasped, covered her mouth with her hand, and mumbled,
“Oh! It was supposed to be a surprise! What am I—”
“Mom!” I grabbed her shoulders, crushing a pretzel in my
palm. “Stop. Who is Matt? Explain logically.”
She nodded. “Okay. Let’s sit down.” She led the way to the
living room, and sat beside me on the couch, patting me on the back. “The thing
is, Lily, I don’t want to explain too much without your father. He—”
“Wait. What?” I interrupted. “My father?”
“Oh! Fiddlesticks! I did it again! Matt’s going to kill me.
I do fine for fifteen years and blow it on the last day. Why am I—”
     “Mom!”
“Right. Well,” she took a breath. “To begin, I should say
that your father is not dead.”
“But, he is dead. You told me that he died–that the train he
was on hit a cow.”[i]
“No, Sweetie.” She patted my knee. “He’s not dead. He is
alive and he’s coming to dinner.”
“I don’t understand. The train wrecked, the cow died, Dad
died. You showed me the news story.”
Mom sighed. (Why is she sighing? Did she think that I would
automatically understand? Did I miss the Lily,
your dad is not dead
memo?) “There was a train wreck, a cow did die. And it
was on the news. But your father was not on
the train.”
I took a deep breath. “Okay. Where was he?”
“He wants to explain all this to you, and he should be the
one to do it. Can we just leave it at: he’s not dead, and he’s coming to dinner
tonight?”
“Why did you tell me he was dead?”
“It was safer for everyone if you thought that. But, Lily,
your father can explain this a lot better than me.” She stood up. “Now, I need
to work on getting the prince to fall in love with the princess, and you should
probably get your homework done before dinner. I’m sure you’re going to have a
lot to talk about with your dad.” She turned to go back to the office.
Are you kidding me? That’s the end of the conversation?

[i] If
I seem a little slow to understand what my mom is telling me, keep in mind that
fifteen years of believing my dad is dead is greater than 3 minutes of hearing
he is alive. (15 > 3.)

Book Blast: Sunset Rising by S.M. McEachern

Sunset Rising by S.M. McEachern

February 2024: Desperate to find refuge from the nuclear storm, a group of civilians discover a secret government bio-dome. Greeted by a hail of bullets and told to turn back, the frantic refugees stand their ground and are grudgingly permitted entry. But the price of admission is high.

283 years later… Life as a slave in the Pit had never been easy, but for seventeen-year-old Sunny O’Donnell it was quickly careening out of control. Her mother was killed in the annual spring Cull, leaving her alone with a father who decided to give up on life.  It’s not that she blamed him for grieving, but if they didn’t earn enough credits to keep their place inside the Pit, they would be kicked out into a world still teeming with radiation. That left her to earn the credits for both of them.  It didn’t help that her boyfriend, Reyes Crowe, was pressuring her to get married and abandon her father.

Sunny didn’t think life could get any worse, until she was forced upstairs to the Dome to serve and entertain the elite at a bachelor party. That’s where she met Leisel Holt, the president’s daughter, and her fiancé, Jack Kenner. Now Sunny and Jack Kenner are wanted for treason. If they catch them, they’ll be executed.

She thought Leisel’s betrayal was the end…but it turns out it was just the beginning.

Excerpt:

I had decided I didn’t want to give up on my plan to help change things. After all the hardship I had brought on my father and Summer, I owed it to them to try to make things right. I didn’t want to fail.

Jack stood up and went into his T’ai Chi stance. I followed. He began the fluid movements and I tried to keep up, but he seemed to be going a lot faster tonight.

“So you want to start stopping people in the hall and ask them if they want to join the rebellion?” Jack asked, his tone light.

“Well, it sounds stupid when you say it like that.”

“Alright, we’re all warmed up now.” Jack faced me in a defensive stance. “Take your best shot.”

“I don’t feel like it anymore.”

“Come on.” He flicked a hand out at me, stopping inches from my face. “Pretend I’m Reyes. You must be mad at him.”

I threw the heel of my hand toward his face, which he blocked easily. I followed with a roundhouse kick at his stomach. He pushed me away.

“That’s weak, Sunny,” he said. “Come on. The other night you just about ripped my head off when you were mad about Summer.”

I had been really mad about Summer. Even the thought of her now in the clutches of that crazy president was making me angry. He had my father, too. My anger snuck out of the place where I thought I’d had it tucked safely away and gripped me again.

I threw a punch as hard as I could at Jack, then another. He blocked them both, but I kept coming at him. First with my right leg followed swiftly by my left. He threw a right punch at me, but I pulled my head back and he missed. I instinctively knew he was going to follow with his left fist, and I ducked. He missed again. He was smiling at me. I came at him to wipe the smile off his face, but he turned, and I missed. He grabbed me from behind.

“I see the boyfriend isn’t the key to getting you mad. Your best friend is,” he whispered in my ear.

I drove my elbow as hard as I could into his stomach. As soon as I made contact, I heard his breath forced out of him. I realized I might have hit him too hard.

“I’m sorry!” I turned around to see if he was okay. He was bent over, holding his stomach. “Jack, are you hurt?”

“I’ll be fine,” he choked out.

I felt a little helpless watching him struggle to get his breath back. He finally straightened up and gently touched a couple of his ribs.

“Nothing broken.” He limped off to sit in a chair. “Maybe I should have told you the first rule of sparring before I started teaching you. You don’t actually hurt your partner.”

“Sorry. I guess I let my frustrations get the better of me.”

“I don’t suppose there’s a hot shower in here?” he asked, even though he must have known the answer.

“No.” I laughed at the thought. “But I can take you to the common bath.”

He got up from the chair. “Take me.”

I found a couple of towels and a bar of soap in a cupboard. “We only have about forty-five minutes left before lights out. We need to be back by then.”

We left the apartment and headed toward the bathroom. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jack changed his mind when he saw where he had to bathe. It wasn’t anything like the private hot shower in his apartment. When we reached the common bath, I was silently relieved to see that the water had been changed recently. It wasn’t bad at all.

“It’s freezing!” Jack exclaimed when he put his hand in the water. “I’m not getting in there.”

“You don’t actually get in. Soak your towel in the water and wash off that way. You can dry with mine. You go first.” I started toward the door.

“Wait. We’re supposed to be married. Isn’t it going to look weird if we’re taking turns in here?”

“I’m not watching you have a bath. I’m only prepared to take the pretend marriage thing so far.”

He gave me a wry look. “We’ll just turn our backs on each other. It will save time, and we can get back before lights out.”

“I don’t know. It seems a little…intimate.” But there was a guard on duty within view of the bathroom, and he might wonder why we were taking turns.

“I promise I won’t peek,” Jack said, but I wasn’t convinced. “Hey, I’m taking a big risk here, too. You know how many girls would love to see the Jack Kenner naked?”

That made me smile. A week ago, that was probably true. “I can’t believe I’m going to do this. Turn around.”

We both turned our backs on each other. I stripped as fast as I could so I wouldn’t have time to change my mind. I heard his clothes drop to the floor. An image of my hands on his naked chest came back to me, and a feeling of excitement began to grow in the pit of my stomach. If I turned around right now we would both be naked and only inches apart. A warm sensation spread through me at the thought, and my chest tightened, making it difficult to breathe. I wanted to banish the thoughts from my mind. I didn’t want to think of Jack in that way.

I dunked one of the towels into the water and scrubbed my arms. The water was freezing and made me shiver, but at least now I could blame my heavy breathing on that. And I was grateful it was helping to douse the heat that seemed to be consuming me. When I was done, I rinsed the towel and stuck it out behind my back to pass it to him.

“That was quick,” he said. I heard the water splashing behind me then Jack sucked his breath in. “Oh my god, it’s cold!”

I dried off, put on my clothes and waited for him to finish and get dressed before I knelt down to wash my hair.

“Not so bad,” Jack said, but I could tell he was lying.

He dipped his head in the water, ran the bar of soap through his hair, and then rinsed. I was still working on my long hair. A lot of coal was coming out, darkening the water and I felt a little guilty considering it had just been changed.

I wrapped the towel around my head to hide my red hair until I could reapply the coal. “We better get back before lights out,” I said.

Jack opened the door for me. “Even though it was freezing, it feels good to be clean,” he said.

“I like the cold. It’s refreshing.” Maybe I would have to have a bath every night if my body was going to continue to respond to Jack like that, I thought.

Back at our apartment, I busied myself hanging up the towels and brushing out my wet hair. I was feeling a little vulnerable without the coal, but knew I would have to wait until my hair dried before I could reapply it. The lights would go out any minute now. I put the brush away and turned around to find Jack flopped in a chair observing me.

“What?” I asked.

“Nothing.” He looked away. But there was something about the way he was looking at me…

“Did you peek?” I asked.

“Sunny,” Jack shook his head, but a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth and his cheeks turned pink. “Of course I peeked. I’m a guy.”

The Buzz About the Book

"As an avid reader of all kinds of books, I often find many fantasy books sloppily written, as though the genre is the dumping ground of less talented writers. So imagine my delight and surprise when right at the get-go--from the first page onwards--`WhipEye' demolished my prejudice and reminded me that every once in a while, you find that shiny needle in the proverbial haystack." ~ 5 Star Review, Meghan, Amazon

"Attention to detail, best of all fleshed out and well-written and well-rounded character development. There's an abundance of well illustrated scenes that actually make you feel like you are right there in the story -or at least wish you were - and that's something I really look for in a good book. " ~ 5 Star Review, Tali, Amazon

"`Whipeye' by Geoffrey Saign is a wonderfully written fantasy story that combines elements of fantasy and magic. The author has created a fantastical world that is vividly imagined with magical creatures and strange but colorful characters...What really makes this story engaging are the likeable characters that you can't help but root for. The story may be about an adventure that involves magic and supernatural elements, but it's also about friendship and discovering one's strength when it's needed the most. " ~ 5 Star Review, Portia A., Amazon

"Whipeye is a thrilling magical adventure with surprises at every turn, a story that deserves to be read." ~ Laurisa White Reyes, Editor-in-Chief of Middle Shelf Magazine and author of The Celestine Chronicles series

"Simply put…it’s a creative story that draws you in from the beginning. The twists and turns, the interesting characters and surprises keep you wanting to turn the next page. This walk into a fantasy serves as a nice mini-vacation without having to go anywhere or plan anything. I look forward to the next book. Well done. " ~ 5 Star Review, Michael S., Amazon
