Blog Tour/Review: Love on a Whim by Aubrey Mace

Six months out of law school, Rachel Pearce is completely disillusioned by her job hunt. Despite pounding the pavement with her Ivy League degree in hand, her job prospects are no brighter than the day she graduated. Then in a chance meeting with a former acquaintance, eccentric young millionaire Henry Walker, Rachel finds an unexpected opportunity: Henry is looking for a personal secretary. Swallowing her pride, Rachel sets aside her law firm aspirations for what she envisions as secretarial work—mountains of paperwork and filing. But when she finds her most demanding duty to be daily cookie runs for her new boss, she’s baffled by her unconventional job responsibilities.

As she’s pulled into Henry’s delightful whims, caught in a whirlwind of private jets and fancy dinners, Rachel finds herself inexplicably drawn to this handsome and charismatic man. But reality always has a way of intruding, and logic tells her that this adventure can’t last. When real life inevitably comes calling, Rachel must decide if she’s willing to trade in her dream of success in the courtroom for a chance at love.

I loved this book!! It was such a fun, fast read which had me laughing out loud multiple times. Rachel Pearce is an attorney without a job. She's getting desperate for something when she runs into Henry Walker, an ex-boyfriend of her best friend, Shannon. He offers her a job and she's not interested until her situation becomes dire.

Once she starts working for Henry, she is given quirky tasks to complete, like mastering the copy machine, helping him with his book club and buying gourmet cookies every day. She is also exposed to the life of the wealthy and enjoys it but she can take it or leave it. Her friend, Shannon, is going through a major life change and that caused some funny scenes as well.

I enjoyed all the characters in this book and thought they interacted well together. I wasn't that impressed with Henry at first but he quickly grew on me and I loved how their relationship developed.

I didn't even know this was a sequel until I was telling my sister about it and she told me there was another book, so I would say this definitely stands on its own. The first book is the story of her best friend, Shannon, and her husband, Nathan. This is the first book I've read by this author and I enjoyed her writing style a lot! I will be reading more of her books in the future!

Aubrey Mace lives in Sandy, Utah. She attended LDS Business College and Utah State University. When she is not writing, she enjoys cooking, traveling, gardening, playing the cello (badly), and spending time with her family and psychotic cat.

Aubrey has four published novels: SPARE CHANGE, which won the 2008 Whitney Award for Best Romance, MY FAIRY GRANDMOTHER, SANTA MAYBE, and BEFORE THE CLOCK STRIKES THIRTY. She also has a novella, "The Science of Sentiment", included in the Timeless Romance Anthology Spring Collection.

As a goddess-born healer, Selah Kilbrid wants nothing to do with the goddess of death and disease, nor any of her human progeny. But when the two people she loves most disappear—her dearest friend Nora Goodwin and her betrothed Lord Henry Fitzalan—Selah has no choice but to leave London in pursuit of Death’s most powerful daughter.

Accompanied by a ragtag group of travelers, Selah follows a treacherous path across the Irish Sea to the long-forgotten prison of a witch who once nearly destroyed Ireland. Selah would face any danger to protect those she loves, but what if it means unleashing a greater evil on the human world? Could she risk the lives of many to save a few, or are some sacrifices too great?

The first book took place in Philadelphia, the second book took us to England and this third book takes us to Ireland. At the end of the second book, Nora and Henry disappear so at the beginning of this one, James and Selah take off to find them. Their plan is simple and they hope to accomplish it quickly. However, that is not meant to be the case.

Their plans are changed rather quickly as they are joined by two people Selah wasn't thrilled to see. There are many other twists and turns as the story continues and it doesn't let up until the very end. There are more revelations which change things for multiple people. Loose ends are tied up and the ending is perfect!

I have rooted for Selah and Henry to work out from the beginning and they've come a long way. They're separated at the beginning of the book and I was anxious for them to meet up again. They're a great match and make each other stronger. There were characters to love and hate and some I wasn't sure of but I loved how it all came together in the end.

This is a fabulous end to a fascinating trilogy!! I have enjoyed it from the beginning and look forward to reading more of Ms. Edgren's work in the future!

Blog Tour/Author Interview: Forte by J.D. Spero

Pre-Order link:

Johannah Davies (JD) Spero was born near a pristine lake in the Adirondacks and has lived in various cities such as St. Petersburg (Russia), Indianapolis, Dallas, and Boston. She has pursued her love of narrative through degrees in English, Russian, and teaching—and has worked as an actress, a yoga instructor, a web design entrepreneur, freelance writer, and a high school English teacher. She lives in the Northeast with her husband and three young sons.

Drawing on her experience as a high school teacher—this time with a social concern, Spero infuses the rites of passage for the teenager—cliques, first kisses, peer pressure, and bullying—with magic. This stresses how tenuous and critical this time is for young people in a new, fascinating way. Written from Sami’s point of view, Spero’s narrative puts the reader into the mind of a fifteen-year-old who must navigate the tumultuous waters of being the new girl—the underdog who starts to win and is intoxicated by it. Truly a page-turner, this action-packed story will have readers of all ages eager to see what happens next.

Spero’s debut novel, Catcher’s Keeper, was chosen as a Finalist in the 2014 Indie Excellence Book Awards contest and also made the top 5% out of 10,000 entries in the 2013 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award.

Author Interview:

1. Advice for writers?

Keep writing. Don’t accept your excuses. There is always time.

Also…you can’t do it alone. There will always be something you’re not seeing. Once you have a piece you believe in and love, get a good editor you trust. Together, make it great.

2. What's up next for you?

My favorite part of writing is creating the story from scratch, so I always have a project going in that phase. Currently, I just finished my very first draft of another novel (adult fiction) with the working title HENRY TROUT SAVES A HEDGEHOG which has an element of mystery…and a very cute hedgehog. Henry Trout is a six-year-old boy who loves nocturnal animals so much, he sneaks outside in the middle of the night to catch one for a pet. Through the darkness of his backyard, he witnesses a crime being committed against his neighbor and beloved babysitter. Turns out, the attacker is none other than his teenage brother. Henry Trout must figure out what to do with this knowledge, and whether or not he can find forgiveness in his heart.

3. Please provide some insight, a secret or two about your book / story.

In FORTE, my main character is the hero of the story, but she is also the victim of peer pressure, bullying, and drug abuse. Even though FORTE has an element of fantasy, it deals with very real issues teens are dealing with today. Its message is not new or unusual, but the way it’s told might take you by surprise.

4. Name one entity that you feel supported your writing, outside of family members?

I’ve taken several online writing courses at Writing Academy with Steve Alcorn. They were invaluable.

There’s also a great network of writers and editors online that I’ve connected with throughout the years. It’s a very rich and rewarding community to be a part of.

5. What is your favorite snack while writing?

Grand Marnier (That’s kind of a joke. Kind of.)

Blog Tour/Review: A Timeless Romance Anthology: Annette Lyon Collection, by Annette Lyon

A Timeless Romance Anthology: Annette Lyon Collection, by Annette Lyon
2015, 350p, Clean Romance
My Rating=5 Stars
Source: Received a copy for an honest review

The ANNETTE LYON COLLECTION contains brand new contemporary romance novella OUR SONG, as well as five hand-picked readers’ and reviewers’ favorites of Annette’s popular Timeless Romance Anthology novellas. Readers will love this selection of three contemporary and three historical romance novellas.

In OUR SONG, a charming romance novella, Cassie and Matt have been dating in the Yellowstone area for two years, and things are, well, average. When Cassie meets up with two college friends who are visiting, their love lives like sound like fairy tales: rose petals, chocolates, candles on the beach… Cassie goes home feeling like she’s missing out. After all, repeatedly watching Old Faithful erupt and walking through sulfur-smelling gases at Fountain Paint Pot don’t exactly say “romance.” Maybe things with Matt aren’t going anywhere, and it’s time to move on. Then she discovers that perception and reality are completely different things. Now she can only hope it isn’t too late to show Matt how much she really cares.

In the sweet novella GOLDEN SUNRISE, Natalie takes time out of her crazy schedule to fly to Vegas for her best friend’s wedding. Sierra and Jason, high-school sweethearts, are finally getting married. Fortunately for Natalie, her old high-school flame, Adam, has a work commitment and can’t be there as best man. But when she arrives at the wedding rehearsal—late and ragged—Adam is there. When Adam makes a wild suggestion, Natalie just may take him up on it, even though she knows he’s moved on. A single choice may mean Natalie is taking a shot at reclaiming the past—or that she's putting her heart in harm’s way a second time.

FIRSTS AND LASTS, an enchanting novella, begins with Dani’s last week in New York. She’s failed in her dreams to catch a break as an actress and is now ready to return home and dust herself off. As she visits the places on her final to-see list, she meets Mark, another New York City transplant with big dreams. Except Mark hasn’t given up on his. As they spend the day together, Dani realizes that even though she hasn’t hit the “big time” she might be living her dream after all. Only problem: she has a one-way ticket back home.

In the compelling novella WAR OF HEARTS, Anna, a journalist, is desperate to escape the magazine where Pete, her now-former boyfriend, also works. Heartbroken and still in love with him, Anna snags an assignment to cover the Winter War in Finland. She arrives at a snowy Finnish battlefront only to discover that Pete is already there—as her photographer. She’s determined to be professional about the situation until a battle breaks out in camp, putting her and Pete in harm’s way and putting their love to the test.

The captivating novella BETWEEN THE LINES follows Jane Martin, who is intelligent but extremely shy, especially around men. When the Aid and Cultural Society proposes a letter-writing program, Jane signs up, hoping she can find true friendship. The program doesn’t run as smoothly as expected, and unknown to Jane, one of the men in her city becomes her writing friend. Thomas Allred has always known shy and quiet Jane, but reading her letters written to his secret persona, opens his eyes to what an amazing woman she is. The only trouble is, Jane doesn’t know that the man who she is falling in love with through letters is also Thomas, the man who is falling in love with her in person.

In the charming novella A TASTE OF HOME, we meet Claire Jennings, who’s on her way to spend Christmas with her family. As she rides the train with William Rhodes, who grew up across the street, memories of Christmases past flood her mind. He may be twenty-one now, but she can’t forget his torturous teasing from their school years. At the rail station, Claire discovers that her home is under quarantine because her little brother has measles. She's stuck in town, away from her family, on her favorite holiday. William stays behind with her, and as Christmas Day approaches and her homesickness deepens, she discovers that perhaps he has changed in more ways than one.

I'm not caught up on all the anthologies that contain Annette Lyon's works, so I had only read one of these stories before, War of Hearts, which was even better the second time around. I loved this entire collection! There was such a variety and each felt so different that it was hard to tell they were written by the same author.

It started strong with Our Song. Cassie and Matt had been dating for two years and after Cassie met up with some college friends and listened to their glamorous lives, she felt that something was missing in her relationship with Matt. She expressed her doubts to him and he realized that he needed to make some major changes to keep her. I love what happened next and the message in this story!

I had fun reading the rest of the collection, too! Each story drew me in and I was invested in the characters. Sometimes when I read novellas, I feel like something's missing but these are well written and stand on their own. This is an author that I am familiar with but haven't read a lot of her books. I am now a fan and will definitely be reading more of her work in the future!

Annette Lyon is a Whitney Award winner, the recipient of Utah’s Best in State medal for fiction and the author of ten novels, a cookbook, and a grammar guide as well as over a hundred magazine articles. She’s part of the Timeless Romance Anthologies line of sweet romance stories, a senior editor at Precision Editing Group, and a cum laude graduate from BYU with a degree in English. When she’s not writing, editing, knitting, or eating chocolate, she can be found mothering and avoiding the spots on the kitchen floor.

Happy Release Day!

If you’ve been around a little while, you might remember The Timely Death Trilogy releasing a year or so ago…but the Dark tale wasn’t quite over yet. When the original publisher closed down a week before the last novel’s release, author Shannon A. By sharing and tweeting and messaging and showing their support, Clean Teen Publishing came in a saved the day (and the trilogy). Book Review: Veils and Vengeance by Rachelle J. Christensen

Veils and Vengeance, by Rachelle J. Christensen

My Rating=4.5 Stars

When wedding planner, Adrielle Pyper, goes to Hawaii to orchestrate a destination wedding, she isn't prepared for what she finds.

After the trauma of her previous event, the beautiful isle of Kauai is the perfect place for Adri to unwind and do what she does best – plan. She even lets herself indulge in the attention of the groom’s handsome brother. But just when everything seems to be perfect, an afternoon snorkeling trip turns to murder when Adri discovers the body of a young woman.

Shaken, but unable to let it go, Adri’s sleuthing leads her into more danger than she could imagine. When a number of “accidents” threaten her own life, it soon becomes apparent that someone will do anything to keep Adri from interfering with their vengeance.

For great craft tips, visit Adri's website, www.mashedpotatoesandcrafts.com.

I loved the first book in this series and was excited to read more! Adrielle Pyper, or Adri, went through some traumatic experiences in the first book and she is now in Hawaii to help with a wedding. Things are going well until she's out snorkeling and finds a young woman's body. She can't get her out of her mind and tries to help figure out who she is and what happened to her but someone is determined to keep her from learning the truth.

I love the Hawaiian setting and felt like I was there. There were times that felt peaceful and others that were definitely hectic. I enjoyed the twists and turns along to the way to solving the mystery. There were plenty of suspects and I changed my mind quite a few times as to who the murderer was.

Adri is torn between two men in this book. She's recently met Jon and takes to him right away. She has some history with Luke, but they haven't always gotten along. I liked both of them but definitely had my favorite and was happy with the choice she made in the end. I'm looking forward to reading the next installment!!

Book Blitz: The House at the End of the Street by Jennie Jones

On Tour with Prism Book Tours.

Fall in love in Swallow’s Fall with
The House at the End of the Street
by bestselling Australian romance author Jennie Jones!

Introduction and Exclusive Excerpt
By Author Jennie Jones

The House at the End of the Street follows the adventures of the heart for Gemma Munroe (blond, sporty, home-loving artist and would-be toy shop owner) and the love of her life – Josh Rutherford (tall, tanned, skilled with horses and carpentry and reticent to say where he’s been for the last ten years). Now he’s back for a week and sparks are flying. Josh owns the toy shop and Gem wants to buy it. But there’s more trouble at Gem’s back than she’d thought, and Josh can’t bring himself to leave town without knowing she’ll be safe.

The House at the End of the Street is book #5 in the bestselling Swallow’s Fall series. But each book in the series can be read alone and frequently are – Jennie’s had plenty of readers buy book #4 and then go back for books #1, #2 and #3.

Jennie’s fictional town of Swallow’s Fall is set in a remote country area in the Australian Snowy Mountains and boasts 100 residents. Lots of them falling in love, some of them longing for dreams to come true, some of them scheming or creating mayhem with their matchmaking plans – but all of them leaving a mark on this small country town.

Jennie has a great rapport with her readers all over the world and recently asked them if they’d read a new series: Daughters of Swallow’s Fall – and the resounding answer was – Yes!

Read on for the excerpt...

“What do you know about Grandy’s place?" he asked.

Gem’s eyebrows shot up. "The lonely homestead?"

"Why d’you call it that?"

She shrugged. "It’s been empty since he died. Most people just call it the house at the end of the street. What’s it to you anyway?"

"This and that."

Gem’s exasperation bubbled, overwhelming the original idea of coming out here to calmly persuade him to leave town. ‘This and that,’ she parroted. "Is that all you’ve got? Why don’t you want anyone to know what you’ve been doing?"

The way he bowed his head and studied the ground, his broad shoulders slumped in some kind of despair, caused Gem some remorse.

"Are you in trouble, Josh?" she asked in a whisper. Maybe that’s why he was so evasive. Maybe he’d made a big mistake in life. Maybe he’d been in prison. No, wait—he had a tan.

He smiled at her, the skin creasing around his eyes. A little more depth to the crinkles now, suggesting that he’d done a lot of smiling over the years. That he’d enjoyed himself.

"No. I’m not in trouble." He seemed to come out of his reverie. He lifted a hand and swept it through her hair, brushing it back from her forehead. "Not the way you’re thinking."

Gem stilled. The gesture was one she remembered from their best-friend days of long ago, but there had been nothing more than friendship in it then—this touch spoke of everything undealt with and unsaid between them since their moment this afternoon.
