Perrie Lynn skated to the center of the ice, and after one last quick pivot, she assumed her starting position in the center of the ice and the melody of Moonlight Sonata began.
Lark’s tears flowed freely. Miraculously, though, after the first couple of jumps her tears stopped. Along with all sense of time and any focus on technical elements. She lost herself in Perrie Lynn’s graceful journey across the ice and the triple jumps that brought outbreaks of applause. Maybe it was the lightness of her arm movements that enchanted Lark the most. No, the extension of her dramatic arabesques captured Lark’s attention.

When Perrie Lynn finished her final spin, Lark let her head drop against Miles’ shoulder. “Thank you for this.”

So many all-time favorite movies have a second chance theme. Maybe this is why big fans have watched them multiple times. Here are a few of my favorites.


AMUSED BY HOW proud he was that he’d asked Lark out on a real date, Miles’s heart raced. Even his hands were clammy, like a teenager who knew that his date wasn’t just any girl. She was special. At some point, maybe after watching Perrie Lynn skate live for the first time, Miles was hit by how fast the weekend had passed. He’d wished he could have slowed it down, made it last.


“The girl is a beautiful skater,” Andi said. “From the flash I saw, you and Lark seemed like quite a couple, huddled together, all smiles. Is there something you’re not telling me? And what about Perrie Lynn’s mother? I heard she’s sick.”

I Am A Reader - What Do we Know about Perrie Lynn?

A couple of my reader-writer friends have remarked about Perrie Lynn being so vibrant and real, even though she’s not “on stage” in the book. One friend said she found herself tense waiting for Perrie Lynn’s performance scores—just like the minutes of waiting during televised competitions! I like that—as far as I’m concerned, Perrie Lynn is out there living her life. So, even seeing her from afar, what do we know about her?

About the Author

A writer all her adult life, Virginia McCullough has had the opportunity to write the stories of her heart in her novels, including Girl in the Spotlight, the first book in her Two Moon Bay series for Harlequin Heartwarming. This is an invaluable resource for dancers and pioneer enthusiasts alike!

Over the past year, my daughter has been part of a youth folk dance group, which is part of the reason I'm not blogging as much as I used to--that, as well as other things we're doing, have become pretty time consuming. In full disclosure, she was involved in one of the groups for this project so I might be just a little bit biased about this book. ;)

 When I met Laraine, I was impressed with her knowledge of pioneer dances and authentic clothing. She was easy to work with and is absolutely amazing!

 I was excited to get my hands on this book to see the finished product. My daughter and I sat down and watched her dances first, which was lots of fun. We then watched all the other ones and there are lots more she's looking forward to learning!

 I enjoyed learning the history of dancing in the Mormon culture. Laraine covers the where, when, what, how and why the pioneers danced. I also got a kick out of some of the "rules." The majority of the book covers each dance with a short history and detailed steps. Music is included so having live musicians is an option. At the end, she includes a section on the proper pioneer clothing for men, women and children which is helpful for the times you want to be authentic.

 This will make a fun activity for Trek, a family reunion, or even a youth activity. The DVD is helpful to see what the dances actually look like and to help learn the steps. Dancing is a wholesome, fun activity that adults, teens, and even small children can enjoy doing together!

In 1995 she co-authored with Michael Hamblin Old Time Utah Dances, a self-published book/CD combo. She currently lives in Orem, Utah.

The characters in all my novels have to heal something in the past in order to move forward. That’s how they earn their second chance. By the way, I’ve always disliked those glib “sayings,” like, “You have to put the past behind you.” Well, that somehow implies the past leaves no scars or we have no memories, or, worst of all, we haven’t learned anything from significant challenges.

To me, healing is about changing the way we feel about past events that cause us pain—especially things we view as mistakes. Healing is about perspective and making peace, but that’s not the same as forgetting or pretending something isn’t important. Acceptance helps heal and allows for Lark and Miles to open their arms and embrace their second chance.



About the Author

A writer all her adult life, Virginia McCullough has had the opportunity to write the stories of her heart in her novels, including Girl in the Spotlight, the first book in her Two Moon Bay series for Harlequin Heartwarming. (Book 2 is scheduled for release in January 2018). Daphne Lancaster is timid so she is not looking forward to her first London season. She is excited, though, when James Tilburn shows up at her door. Six years ago, she had a brief encounter with him where he was kind to her but he didn't know who she was. James is currently dealing with some serious family issues and his desire to court Daphne isn't quite what it seems.

 Daphne was easy to love from the beginning. She's timid, but has a lot of depth to her if anyone is interested in getting to know her better. I also liked James and felt bad for the way he was being manipulated. He was willing to make the best of a tough situation. As he got to know Daphne, he realized how amazing she was.

 There were times that I thought the story moved slowly, but I enjoyed the character development so that didn't bother me. I enjoyed all the characters, even the ones that weren't very likable. Daphne's brother-in-law, The Duke of Kielder, aka The Dangerous Duke, is intimidating and I was glad he was on her side. There were some great interactions between him and James, and I was nervous for James at times.

 I enjoyed this book from beginning to end! Sarah Eden is one of my favorite authors and she delivered once again!

I'm drawn to faith-based true stories. The life of Kennedy Hansen touched me when I was first introduced to her story. This beautiful young woman trusted God’s plan even when those around her questioned why Kennedy had to endure such trials. Before writing the script, I had the opportunity to read through hundreds of journal entries, with the turning of each page, I began to understand her personality. She was kind, compassionate, funny, teased, loved cheerleading, had faith, adored boys (especially Jaden), uplifted those around her, and had great family support including a funny little brother. We had the honor of filming Love, Kennedy in the Hansen’s home, the high school Kennedy attended, and other unique locations specific to her life. I hope when you see the movie that you are inspired by the warmth and love of Kennedy Hansen’s life.

In life, we all have a story. Some stories are happy, some are sad, some are long and some are short. It is human nature to treat our life as a story book full of different chapters that portray our lives. Our family’s story began with a dream. A dream that was given to me that all now makes sense. In that dream, I was shown my family, my story and what was to come. Unfortunately, part of our dream and a chapter in our life was losing our beloved Kennedy. Yet, through losing her, we also gained her. We gained her through so much more of understanding that when hard things come, you can be positive, you can be loving, understanding and provide an array of love to all of those around you. Those hard things have proven to allow us to grow as a family and share. Share the deepest parts of our souls and the hardest parts of our minds and hearts.

He took to heart the rawness, reality and true life story of Kennedy, our family and the experiences that we endured. He spent time reading, pondering, questioning and asking. He did nothing hasty, yet everything perfectly. He wanted to make sure, that if he was going to tell her story, that the most important parts were shared. And guess what? He did that!

When you see the film, you will see our Kennedy and know the kind of person she was. She loved boys (especially Jaden). She loved her family. All of us, just not one or two of us. The movie shows the special relationship that she has with each one of her family members. She loved cheerleading and music and always dreamed of being normal. And lastly, she loved her Savior and Heavenly Father with perfect faith which in turn allowed her to love EVERYONE whom she met.

Excerpt:

 “Hey, you ever been to this camp?” a tall girl with chestnut hair and wire rimmed glasses asked me.

“No,” I stammered.

The girl shook her head and turned to the girls standing around her.

“Ugh, why doesn’t anyone know anything about this camp?” she asked them.

“I got a flyer in the mail,” I said.

The girl turned back to me.

“Thanks a lot, Captain Obvious, so did we,” said the girl. She gave a look to the other girls that said, “Can you believe this girl?” The girls snickered a little. A few looked at me with a little pity.

I mentally kicked myself. Of course they got flyers. I don’t know why I had said that. And now these girls probably thought I was stupid. I moved away from them.

 “It’s obviously not a camp for geniuses,” said the girl under her breath.

I felt my cheeks flush bright red. I kept my back to the girls. I didn’t want to risk them seeing me upset.

More kids arrived. I’d guess there were about fifty of us total. A nice coach bus pulled up outside the automatic doors and we all scurried out to board the bus. It looked much nicer than the yellow school bus I took to go on field trips. The bus looked more like the ones Rose took to out-of-state sport competitions.

I stayed near the back of the line to board the bus last. I took a seat near the front of the bus, next to a window. No one sat next to me. I tried to bury myself in the cushioned seat, wishing I could disappear completely.

The bus driver, a beefy man stood in front of us. His face looked like stone, his face and neck jagged from scars. He stared at us, waiting for us to settle down. When the kids in the back didn’t quiet down, he bellowed for us to shut up.

Silence fell over the bus.

“Alright kids,” said the bus driver, his tone softening but only slightly. “It’s a six hour drive up to Camp Martinsen. We’re making no stops; so don’t even think of asking. There is a restroom in the back of the bus. Try to stay quiet.”

 The bus driver sat in his seat and moved the bus into the steady stream of other cars and buses driving through the airport. We slowly meandered through the lanes of traffic until we made it onto the expressway. After a little gridlock, we began to move north and were on our way to Camp Martinsen. I sat alone in my row near the front of the bus. I looked back at the rest of the campers. They chatted with each other. One boy tried to start everyone singing “99 Bottles of Beer” but the tall girl with wire rimmed glasses made him stop by the time he made it to 94 bottles.

Liz continued writing in her spare time while attending college at Dominican University and law school at the John Marshall Law School.
